Three-year-old Lucas Heagren, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, was in critical condition Monday night when he was brought Knox Community Hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a gun that had allegedly been left on top of the television in his home.
At the time of the accident, both of the boy’s parents, his two younger siblings and his grandfather were all in the house.
Kaitlin Campbell, the boy’s mother, called 9-1-1 around 6:04 p.m. and reported her son had shot himself above his left eye with a 9mm weapon, and was still breathing, reports Mount Vernon News.
Campbell told the dispatcher the gun was located on the top of the television “where he usually can’t reach it,” reports Mount Vernon News.
According to Knox County Sheriff’s Capt. David Shaffer, a firearm was recovered from the house and Shaffer described the incident as an “unfortunate accident,” 10TV’s Danielle Elias reported.
Six hours after the accidental shooting, at 12:10 a.m., Lucus died from his injuries, reports Mount Vernon News.
