Little 2-month-old Levi Haggard died last July, after his caretaker laid him down for a nap on his stomach in her queen sized bed, surrounded by pillows.
Cherie Kohenskey, 39, of Troy, Missouri, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree child endangerment, and after initially being charged with involuntary manslaughter back in December, was given a suspended four-year sentence, five years probation, 100 community service hours involving youths, ordered not to be around children under three years of age without supervision, ordered not to baby sit and ordered to participate in child abuse awareness month activities in Lincoln County.
Kohenskey was running an unlicensed daycare out of her home. While state law says that licensed daycare providers can only care for up to 4 unrelated children at one time, Kohenskey was caring for 10, including two of her own children.
The child’s mother said she had previously caught Kohenskey putting her child to sleep in a bed and had asked her not to do it again.
