DC Comics is planning to reintroduce one of their major characters as gay in an issue expected to be released in June.
DC co-publisher Dan DiDio had previously said in an interview with The Advocate that the were planning to introduce new LGBT characters instead of switching the sexual orientation of existing characters. In the past, DC had switched race, size, age, all sorts of identifying features, which begged the question, why not sexual orientation?
According to comic blog, Bleedingcool.com, all that has changed. At Kapow Comic Convention in London on Sunday, DiDo revealed that an existing character – who was previously assumed to be straight will now be “one of our most prominent gay characters.”
The Daily News reports that, according to Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne, DiDio’s view “had evolved”, and he compared the shift to Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.
Who will be reintroduced as a gay character?
Batwoman made a comeback in 2006 as a lesbian, so it is possible it might be a male character this time.
Some of DC Comics’ major characters include: Batman, Aquaman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonderwoman, The Flash, Cyborg, and Plastic Man, as well as many others.
