A 28 year-old waiter in southern Egypt turned his own funeral into a celebration when he woke up during the proceedings, hours after having been declared dead.
Hamdi Hafez al-Nubi (from the village of Naga al-Simman in the southern province of Luxor) suffered a heart attack while working, after which hospital officials pronounced him dead. According to his family, grieving relatives took the man home and followed Islamic tradition by washing his body and preparing him for burial Friday evening.
A doctor was sent to sign the death certificate and she noted that it was strange that the supposed deceased’s body was still warm. She observed him more closely and discovered he was still alive. The doctor then revived both al-Nubi and his mother, who had fainted upon hearing the good news. Both were soon were celebrating with guests.
