Laurie May accused of having sexual relationship with minor after fleeing the state with teen and three children

Laureth "Laurie" May, 29, former teacher accused of running of with her three children and a former teenage student. Mug Shot via Cicero Police.

When Laurie May, a former art teacher in west suburban Chicago, left with her three children on February 15 and could not be reached, her fiance became worried and called police. The mother of three boys, Quincy, 4, Oliver, 2, and Spencer, 1, apparently fled her hometown of Aurora, Illinois and headed to Florida, but before she left, she picked up a former student of hers to accompany her on the trip.

According to CBS News, May was fired from her teaching job recently and was having increasingly heated arguments with her fiance, Shelton Collins. Family and friends say her erratic behavior of late was out of character. Her fiance claims she was suffering from post-partum depression.

May was found with her three sons and former student, Destiny Gruba, 17, in Florida on March 20. Upon alleged evidence of sexual misconduct with a minor, Cicero Police charged May, 29, with kidnapping and sexual assault. Police claim that they have May’s confession that her and Gruba were in a sexual relationship.

May is now in custody on a $500,000 bond. The children are in the custody of their father, who has come out in support of fiance, saying that the pressure of the economy, having 3 kids in 3 years and losing her job just became too much for her.
