George Takei’s current project is his effort to bring the musical Allegiance to the Old Globe Theater in San Diego. Allegiance is a musical focusing on a family during the WWII Japanese internment. This subject has a very special meaning to Star Trek star George Takei. He and his family were interred in several camps when he was a young boy. The Wall Street Journal reports that Takei has made it his lifelong mission to raise awareness about the Japanese internment.
To raise money for his new effort, Takei took to social media. Takei has been working on fundraising through the ‘crowdfunding’ site Indiegogo.com to raise the funds to cover Allegiance’s production costs. Takei’s original goal was to raise $50,000. U-T San Diego reports that the fundraiser exceeded expectations by raising $158,322 from 5,276 backers. The funds were raised in about three weeks.
The world premiere of Allegiance is planned for September of 2012. Besides being a driving force behind the musical’s production, Takei will also star in Allegiance alongside Lea Salonga and Telly Leung.
Takei is thrilled with the success of his fundraising efforts and has released the following ‘Happy Dance’ video in response:
