With lyrics like: “You can keep the diamond ring-it don’t mean nothing anyway. In fact, you can keep everything — except for me,” Katy Perry’s new song “Part of Me” sounds to be targeting Russell Brand.
Perry debuted the song a week after she finalized her divorce from Russell Brand. Dancing around in a skintight gold suit while singing “Part of Me” at the Grammy’s, it seemed that she was sending a message to Brand.
Now, Perry states that the song is not at all about Brand. Perry has recently told MTV News that she originally wrote “Part of Me” for her Teenage Dream album, but it did not make it onto the album. Perry decided to leave it off of the Teenage Dream album because it did not seem to fit.
Even though the song was written two years ago, some of those close to Perry urged her to act as if the song was just written. Yet, she refused to misrepresent the song.
Perry expressed to MTV News: “And some people that I work with were like ‘You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago.’ I’m like ‘…I’m going to tell the truth.’ I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording Teenage Dream, [but] it didn’t feel right on the record. I would’ve had to take out one of my other songs that [made the album] a nice, complete package.”
In an Access Hollywood interview, Perry explained her feelings on the coincidental timing of the release of the new single. Perry said, “I guess the universe is kind of — we’re kind of like, dancing together in some weird way.”
Besides working on her music, Perry has a new endeavor. Access Hollywood reports that the artist has been collaborating on a new version of “The Sims” game.
