A young girl, 8-years-old, was shot in the stomach after a 9-year-old male classmate’s gun accidentally went off. The children are students at the Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton, Washington. Police responded and reportedly took the 9-year-old boy into custody and held him in a juvenile detention facility.

The victim, identified as Amina Kocer-Bowman, was airlifted to a Seattle trauma unit where she remains in critical condition. The incident reportedly happened yesterday, shortly before the school day’s final bell. The gun was reportedly in the boy’s backpack and accidentally went off.

According to CBS Local News, it is not currently known how the boy got the gun or why it was in his backback. The classroom’s teacher’s husband, Bill Poss, told a local news station that the boy recently transferred into the school and that his wife allegedly had behavioral concerns about the child.

CBS also reported that family and friends gave reporters a thumbs up last night as they left the hospital. This may be interpreted as a good sign that Amina pulled through surgery without complications.
