16-year-old Laura Dekker finishes sailing around the world
The Associated Press has reported that 16-year-old Laura Dekker has just finished sailing around the world in her own sailboat the “Guppy”. The trip has taken Dekker one year to complete. Dekker stopped at various ports along the route to sleep, study and make repairs to her boat. She arrived home to St. Maarten on Saturday. Dutch authorities tried initially to block her voyage stating that she was too young to make the decision to risk her life attempting the trip.
Dekker claims that she is the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe alone by boat. Both the Guinness World Records and the World Sailing Speed Record Council could not confirm the claim. Both organizations stopped keeping track to discourage young people from taking risks in attempts to break the records.
Her plans now are to finish school and then possibly move to New Zealand (by sailing there, of course).
