Montana mall cop saves Christmas

Rimrock Mall was the scene of some Christmas spirit

What looked for sure to be a ruined Christmas for one woman was saved by the doggedness of the employees at her local mall.

After shopping at the Rimrock Mall in Billings, Montana, Carrie McNeese noticed that the envelope containing $300 of her Christmas shopping money was missing. The money was meant to buy the rest of the presents for her four children and their spouses, along with her eleven grandchildren.

“You lose your Christmas money, no matter how much it is, and you’re just sick to your stomach,” McNeese told the Billings Gazette.

Normally the story would end there, with the load under the Christmas tree significantly lighter this season, but fortunately for McNeese, an employee at JC Penney found the envelope and turned it over to the store’s loss prevention supervisor, Reggie Anderson.

Because the envelope also contained a list of McNeese’s grandchildrens’ clothing sizes, Anderson said he “knew this was somebody’s Christmas money,” and that he personally would be “pretty bummed” if he had lost it himself.

Anderson then went on a mission to find the owner of the lost cash, and reviewed video from the store’s surveillance cameras looking for clues. He eventually saw McNeese and identified her as the one who lost the envelope, but he still had no knowledge of her identity.

Fortunately McNeese had written the clothing sizes on a sticky note with a company logo on it — Stewart Title Company.

Anderson emailed a screenshot from the security camera to the company, thinking that she might have worked there or was associated with the business.

He turned out to be correct — McNeese, a real estate broker and owner of her own real estate office, is a frequent client of the title company and an employee recognized her right away.

Anderson told the paper that he was happy to do a “little detective work to help somebody out.”

“It just seemed like the right thing to do,” Anderson said.

As for McNeese, she was over the moon with the return of her money and the ability to finish her Christmas shopping.

“Call it the Christmas spirit or call it karma,” McNeese said.
