Police report that Dr. Kimberly Quinlan Lindsey, an official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has been arrested and charged with two counts of child molestation and a single count of bestiality.
Police arrested Lindsey, 44, on Sunday and also charged her live-in boyfriend Thomas Joseph Westerman, 42, with two counts of child molestation. Court information and the arrest warrant indicate that they are both accused of “immoral and indecent” sexual acts involving a 6-year-old child. Lindsey is further charged with bestiality, the charge stating that she “did unlawfully perform or submit to any sexual act with an animal.” The incidents allegedly took place between January 1, 2010 and August 22, 2011.
Lt. Pam Kunz of the DeKalb County Police Department said Westerman was released from jail on bond while Lindsey remains incarcerated on a $20,000 bond. No public statement has been made by either of the accused. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 1, according to Reggie Silverman, deputy clerk with DeKalb Magistrate Court.
Lindsey’s biography on the CDC’s website states that she is the deputy director for the Laboratory Science Policy and Practice Program Office there. In the past, she was the senior health scientist in the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response, the office that oversees the allocation of $1.5 billion for terrorism preparedness. Lindsey has received 12 awards for outstanding performance on projects and programs in her 12 years at the CDC according to her bio on the Emory University website, where she had earned her doctorate in immunology and molecular pathogenesis in 1998.
According to CDC spokesman Tom Skinner, the agency is aware of the case but cannot comment on personnel issues.
