A pregnant woman was mauled to death by her pet pit bull in her home in Pacifica, California.
Police Captain Dave Bertini reports that the body of Darla Napora, 32, was found by her husband around noon with a pit bull, one of the family dogs, standing over her. The husband was able to get the pit bull outside before police arrived, but the dog escaped and charged the officers when they arrived.
Police fired three shots, killing the charging animal. The family’s second pit bull was not believed to be involved in the incident, so it was removed and taken to the Humane Society.
Kathy Carlson, a neighbor, described the scene as the husband ran outside (before the police arrived): “He was in the driveway all frantic, yelling…He had blood on his hands, blood on his shirt and blood down his pants.”
Even though a sign hangs on the fence around the home reading “Beware of the Dog,” local residents claim that they had not seen any previous problem with the pit bulls. Carlson said of the Naporas dogs: “They are not barking dogs. They seemed friendly.”
Napora’s father, Darold Larson (of Yakima, Wash.) told the Mercury News that his daughter was an athlete with a great sense of humor. She had been married to her husband Greg for two years. He said “She lived her own life, no matter what anyone else said…She was an individual.”
Shannon Burke, the owner of a local wine brokerage where Darla Napora worked as a salesperson, said that the victim was at least six months along in her pregnancy.
Investigators will examine the dog to determine whether it was sick in any way.
