Chris Whitehead, 12, borrowed his 11 year old sister Joanna’s uniform to attend Impington Village College today, in the hope of gaining support for his protest. Chris is unhappy that during the Summer female students can wear a skirt, but male students are not allowed to wear shorts, and must remain in long trousers. The rules do not prevent males from wearing skirts, however.
According to Sky News, a round 30 of Chris’ classmates joined in the protest, waving banners stating “Shorts for the long term”, “Cool Shorts not Hot Pants” and “What’s Wrong With My Legs?”.
Chris, an aspiring politician, has set up the protest to persuade headteacher Robert Campbell to change the rule, which was created during a uniform consultation in 2009. Chris’ mum is supporting his campaign.
The schools head teacher, Robert Campbell, commented that the decision had caused debate previously.
“Ultimately, boys can wear a skirt to school because it doesn’t say they can’t in the uniform policy and we would be discriminating against them if we did not allow it.
Chris is a very bright and articulate student and we have got a very strong student council. He is one of only two year eight pupils on it.”
Chris has stated he will continue to wear the outfit.
