Could breast milk ice-cream catch on in the U.S.?

Icecreamists in London is selling ice-cream with breastmilk

You have to give kudos to the London restaurant Icecreamists for their marketing prowess. What better way to serve up a range of reactions and gain some attention than by selling ice cream made with breastmilk? According to Fox News Pennsylvania, owner Matt O’Connor claims the ice cream is a healthy, organic and natural choice that tastes great. Many breastfeeding activists, otherwise known as “lactivists” see it as a way to promote breastmilk as a natural food choice and something that their babies would find irresistible.

Moms who donated the breastmilk were amongst the 15 women who answered an ad, offering payment for breastmilk donations. The name of the breastmilk frozen treat is no other than “Baby Gaga”. Women were paid about $24.00 US dollars per ounce and sells at Icecreamists for around $22.60 a serving. Cha-ching!

Perhaps contrary to the exclusive promotion of family entertainment and innocent delicacies, the Icreamists website suggests a more mature ambiance, perhaps catering towards the shock and fetish crowd rather than promoting breastfeeding. Quotes by Perez Hilton and BBC Radio One, who tout the coolness of the ice cream boutique say this about the parlor, “Icecream the Sex Pistols tried to ban.” With a skull as it’s logo, this restaurant doesn’t seem to be going after the suburban family market.

No word yet on how the breastmilk donations are regulated and what pasteurization process is required. Pasteurization is a process that can diminish the nutrient content. In most countries, including the U.S., the use of breast milk is outlawed in commercial restaurants. To make the breast milk cost effective, the amount of regulation and oversight would render it impractical and costly.

UPDATE: UK shuts down breastmilk ice-cream

I am guessing that each serving comes with a coupon for one free Freudian therapy session.

Would that mean that everyone who drinks cows milk needs therapy for wanting to sleep with a cow? Come on! You can’t eat breast milk icecream from the actual boob, lol! What sounds more logical, eating a product made from the same species or from an animal that poops near its udders? I get that we live in a prudish society but breastfeeding is not sexual. Believe me. I’ve breastfed four children and there is nothing sexual about it!

This won’t happen in the US. We prefer to hand over natural and free activities over to corporate entities that require payment and labor.

I have always thought that making human breast milk available to the public would be a great idea!
I breast fed 3 children and often thought that poor mothers could make some extra money by continuing to lactate after their babies were weaned. Lactating burns a tremendous amount of calories so moms could take off weight as well as make a few dollars.
Breast milk is ideal for humans allergic to cow milk.
I can envision a room full of women relaxing, drinking and eating healthy food and expressing milk.
