Police pepper spray family mourning baby

A family is claiming they were pepper sprayed by police in Peoria, Illinois, when in their grief stricken state they refused to let them remove the body of a 4-month-old girl who died in the home.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said Dejamarie Herron reportedly was found Wednesday by family members unresponsive on a bed. Police called to scene attempted to revive the child, but the baby was pronounced dead.

Ingersoll said there were no visible signs of trauma, adding the mother, Shantell Wells, reported the baby had cold symptoms. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

According to Lt. Marshall Dunnigan, family members and friends gathered at the home on news of the child’s death and refused to let the officers out with the baby. Dunnigan said police had to use great force to get the coroner out with the baby.
