Another pit bull attack on toddler

As much as the pro pit bull crowd claims pit bulls are friendly, family dogs, their reputation far exceeds them. The media doesn’t have a bias, it’s just that pit bulls happen to kill and mame children more than any other dog.

A 4-year-old girl was recovering Saturday after being mauled by a neighbor’s pit bull in the backyard of her Humboldt Park home.

Jaslin Sampre was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital in critical condition after the Friday night attack in the 3500 block of West Cortland, her family said.

Most revealing…

The pit bull that mauled her seemed “like a nice dog,” Rodriguez said. “Maybe he doesn’t like kids.”

Sigh, this is very sad, because it’s predictable based on dog psychology.

Evidently, the dog and the girl shared a backyard. The dog (not surprisingly) felt the yard was its territory, and the girl was new. Put the dog and girl together in the back yard without supervision from the dog’s owner, and this was the predictable result. The dog was never taught that this new person was “OK” in the yard. Some dogs will bark when confronted with a threat to their territory; others will attack, especially if the threat looks small and easily taken on (i.e. a 4-year-old child).

Of course the dog seemed nice when with its owner. In that situation, the dog does not need to defend territory, since the owner is the dominant “dog” in the family.

People have a misconception that dogs come in “nice” and “mean” varieties. That is not so. All dogs are territorial, and all dogs are potentially dangerous to a 4-year-old. When and if they decide the 4-year-old needs to be attacked, some dogs will be more willing and able to carry out the “job” than others. Pit bulls are very determined animals, and also very capable.

A dog should never be left unsupervised near a non-family 4-year-old child. Not a pit bull, not a poodle, not any dog, even if everyone thinks it’s a “nice” dog. Any dog could bite a 4-year-old child. And grandma did not count as supervision for the dog, she was not its owner and had no way to control it.

Dog psychology? I don’t care how territorial a dog is, there’s no reason for one to be aggressive to a child in that way. Not a dog with a good temperament. The proper way to refer to a dog being “nice”. There’s a LOT of dogs with poor temperaments. Whether or not they are a pit bull. I’m not pro pit bull, I am pro dog. I think the media DOES have a bias with pit bulls, because they jump to report on anything remotely resembling an attack when it’s that breed, and ignore other attacks. So they do cause hysteria and prejudice.

In the UK, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is the “nanny” dog. The most popular family dog period. They have exemplary temperaments. I’m in dog show/training circles, and I know a lot of amazing pit bulls, who are well bred, well trained, and pose no threat to anyone. Powerful breeds in the wrong hands are not a good mix. Pit bulls are so overbred, by people who have no clue. Backyard breeders.

This happened to the breed I love at one point in time, the German Shepherd. They got so popular, people bred them right and left. Bad temperaments resulted, and hence aggressive dogs and attacks. Soon the public started fearing and hating this breed. That’s what made them dangerous, NOT that they were a German Shepherd. Same with Pit bulls. It is NOT the breed. It’s humans.

i agree with tamandra. it’s the owner, not the dog.
