1,000 pound woman indicted in death of nephew

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Mayra Lizbeth Rosales, the half-ton woman who was arrested in the murder of her 2-year-old nephew, was officially indicted by a grand jury.

The grand jury indicted her after a full autopsy confirmed investigators’ suspicions that the child died March 18 because he had been struck. Investigators believe the toddler was struck at least twice, crushing his head.

Authorities recommended Rosales’ bond be set at $150,000.

The boy’s mother Jaime Rosales, was charged earlier with injury to a child because she allegedly left her son alone with his aunt. Her bond has been set at $100.000.

Prosecutors have to work out how Mayra Rosales will be detained and prosecuted because she weighs nearly 1,000 pounds. She is unable to fit through a door to leave her home. As of Thursday evening, she was not in custody.

Cadaver dogs search for Caylee Anthony

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Florida police have brought in 3 cadaver dogs to help in the search for missing Orlando girl Caylee Anthony.

A sheriff’s investigator, Sergeant John Allen, said Friday that authorities don’t rule out the possibility that Caylee Marie Anthony is still alive.

Deputies say the girl’s 22-year-old mother, Casey Marie Anthony, was arrested Wednesday on charges of child neglect and criminal obstruction. They say the woman told investigators she had dropped off her daughter at a baby sitter last month but hadn’t seen her since. The woman didn’t contact police until this week, officials say, once relatives became concerned.

France cancels baby tv shows

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

French infants are going to have to go elsewhere if they want to get their Baby Einstein fix.

France has banned its broadcasters from airing TV shows aimed at children under three years of age.

A ruling published Wednesday by the High Audiovisual Council, the French broadcast authority, bans such programming in an effort to protect the very young from what it described as the harmful effects of television.

“Television viewing hurts the development of children under three years old and poses a certain number of risks, encouraging passivity, slow language acquisition, over-excitedness, troubles with sleep and concentration, as well as dependence on screens,” the ruling said.

The ruling follows a public debate in France over channels such as BabyFirstTV and Baby TV, which broadcast programming aimed at the under three set 24 hours a day.

Mom, boyfriend charged in BB gun attacks

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

A mother and her boyfriend have been arrested for shooting the woman’s two children with a BB gun.

The children’s mother — Briana Pierce, 26 — and her boyfriend — Paul Frantz, 35 — were arrested on two counts each of child abuse, said Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman. The boy, 9, and his sister were placed in the custody of state Child Protective Services.

Last Thursday, the Sheriff’s Department was called to Homer Davis Elementary School, 4250 N. Romero Road, because the boy had visible bruising on his face, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Pima County Superior Court.

He had been absent on the previous days, and school officials had been told he had the flu, the document said. His mother also left a voice-mail message at the school saying they were in New Mexico, and her son got bruises on his face, so she wanted to keep him home.
