Chicago boy presumed drowned in Lake Michigan
A 13-year-old Chicago boy disappeared under the waves of Lake Michigan over the weekend, and is presumed drowned. He was swimming near the Indiana Dunes, where strong riptides were reported.
Raphael Palomar was last seen Saturday about 1:20 p.m., when he and his younger brother were swimming in 3-foot to 5-foot waves in the waters off Porter Beach, near Indiana Dunes State Park, said Conservation Officer Gene Davis of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Bystanders pulled the 10-year-old from the water, but they were unable to reach the older boy, Davis said. Heavy rip currents were reported, and swimmers were also being kept out of the water at neighboring Indiana Dunes State Park, Davis said.
Lake Michigan was too rough to put divers in the water at the time of the incident, but improved conditions allowed divers to begin searching at 6 a.m. Sunday. Davis said the search would resume Monday morning along beaches with ATVs and in the water with boats.
