Suspected gunman susposedly distraught over divorce

Monday, August 4th, 2008

The mother of Scott Johnson — the man suspected of murdering several teens swimming in Wisconsin woods — is saying that he “turned inward” after his wife left him.

Judy Johnson shared a home with her 38-year-old son and described him as a once-carefree father who became introverted after his wife left him seven years ago and took their two children to Ohio.

“He kept saying, ‘I lost everything; I have nothing,”‘ his mother told The Associated Press on Sunday. “He just grew heartsick and started turning inward.”

She said she didn’t think her son had had a girlfriend since his divorce.

Police officers came to the Johnson residence on Thursday afternoon and left a business card. They didn’t tell Judy Johnson that they were investigating a complaint that her son had sexually assaulted a woman on Wednesday at the river.

Since it seems to be easy to get grant money to prove obvious statements, we’re starting a new study, titled “Drinking in excess daily is bad for your health”. Please send all expensive bourbon directly to MT headquarters.

Parents looking for healthy meal choices for their children are likely to find slim pickings on the menus of the nation’s top restaurant chains, according to a report released Monday by a nonprofit public health group.

Nearly every possible combination of the children’s meals at Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, Sonic, Jack in the Box, and Chick-fil-A are too high in calories, the report by the Center for Science in the Public Interest said.

The report looked into the nutritional quality of kids’ meals at 13 major restaurant chains. The center found 93 percent of 1,474 possible choices at the 13 chains exceed 430 calories — an amount that is one-third of what the National Institute of Medicine recommends that children ages 4 through 8 should consume in a day.

Chicago boy presumed drowned in Lake Michigan

Monday, August 4th, 2008

A 13-year-old Chicago boy disappeared under the waves of Lake Michigan over the weekend, and is presumed drowned. He was swimming near the Indiana Dunes, where strong riptides were reported.

Raphael Palomar was last seen Saturday about 1:20 p.m., when he and his younger brother were swimming in 3-foot to 5-foot waves in the waters off Porter Beach, near Indiana Dunes State Park, said Conservation Officer Gene Davis of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Bystanders pulled the 10-year-old from the water, but they were unable to reach the older boy, Davis said. Heavy rip currents were reported, and swimmers were also being kept out of the water at neighboring Indiana Dunes State Park, Davis said.

Lake Michigan was too rough to put divers in the water at the time of the incident, but improved conditions allowed divers to begin searching at 6 a.m. Sunday. Davis said the search would resume Monday morning along beaches with ATVs and in the water with boats.

Search continues for missing autistic boy

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Police continue to search for an 11-year-old Portland boy with autism who became lost near Mount Saint Helens.

The boy, Alex Irvin of Portland, and his father, Bruce, were hiking on the Siouxon (soo-shahn) trail near Amboy when they decided to split up and meet at Siouxon Falls.

But Alex never showed up, and at about 9:30 that night, his father called the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office.

Searchers are using dogs and horses and all-terrain vehicles to scour the area for Alex.

Man catches toddler who fell from building

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Sign this guy up for the Chicago Bears! They could use a wide receiver.

A diapered 2-year-old boy was perched on the 6-inch ledge of his second-story Main Street apartment at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, holding a cookie in one hand and the windowsill in the other.

Meanwhile, his mother, Crystal Simonds, 21, was still asleep inside, according to police.

As the boy looked down on the sidewalk below, pedestrians stared in horror, watching him sway precariously close to the edge.

Jeffrey Leonard, a 51-year-old Danielson resident on his way to the hardware store, noticed the scene, parked his car and ran beneath the boy — the only person to get close enough to the building to catch him, Leonard said.

14-year-old dad charged with critically abusing son

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Yes, you read that headline correctly — this story is about 4 levels of messed up.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of delinquency in connection with critically injuring his 7-week old son.
Police did not name the 14-year-old boy, his son, or the child’s 14-year-old mother, citing their young ages and the status of the infant and his mother as crime victims.
The infant was in critical condition at University Medical Center, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson police spokesman.
Police learned of the suspected abuse Friday when they were sent to UMC to investigate a report of an infant with suspicious injuries, Officer Linda Galindo said in a weekend news statement.

Man arrested after threats to poison baby food

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Oh, YouTube, you double-edged sword — on the one hand you bring us delightful videos of people getting hit in the nuts. On the other, you’re a conduit for whackjobs to get attention.

Anton Dunn is currently under arrest after he posted a series of videos detailing plans to poison Gerber products — a range of baby food. In one video — Dunn, filming himself from inside a shower stall, claims that his “plan is in motion” and that four babies had already died. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has filed charges against him which could result in up to 10 years in prison or heavy fines.

“Critics will likely say it’s a case of authorities overreacting to a case of over-the-top, look-at-me comedy. But the Trashman videos, in which Dunn wears masks to disguise his identity and rants in a humorless tone, don’t look like they were made to make people laugh”, [CNet’s Caroline McCarthy] says through her blog entry.

Man kills children, commits suicide

Monday, August 4th, 2008

A Georgia man went on a rampage shooting his two sons to death, and injuring his stepfather and wife before turning the gun on himself.

Michael Lee Hill was supposed to be picking up his sons, 7-year-old Michael Anthony Hill and 10-year-old Richard Lawrence Hill, for a visit Saturday afternoon at his parents’ home in Perry, Police Chief George Potter said. Instead, the truck driver put headphones on the boys and shot them execution style in the back of the head, Potter said.

He then shot his stepfather, 64-year-old Andrew Hill, in the chest and chased his estranged wife, 30-year-old Bonnie Jean Hill, into the yard. He shot her three times in the back and leg before shooting himself in the head, Potter said.

Potter said Andrew Hill is in critical condition at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. Bonnie Jean Hill has been released from the hospital.
