Little Leaguer benched after mom didn’t sell hot dogs

A 7-year-old boy in Massachusetts had to sit out his Little League game because his mother failed to show up to work the concession stand. Apparently they have a “No Super Ropes, No Play” policy.

Jodi Hooper of Freetown said she was unable to fulfill her obligation at the concession stand because she couldn’t get time off from work, according to MyFOXBoston.

Dave Brouillette, head of the Freetown Youth Athletic Association, told MyFOXBoston that the concession revenues are necessary to fund the league’s programs and that he has to enforce the rules, which require parents show up for their assigned concession stand shifts or risk suspensions for their children.

Brouillette told the station that he wasn’t able to see his own son play because he had to cover the concession stand shift for Hooper, according to MyFOXBoston.

That is one of the most rediculous “rules” I’ve ever heard of!
Punish the child because his mom could’nt get to the concession stand in time?? Do you know what that does to a child emotionally?? And the poor guy who had to miss his kid playing because he got stuck selling snow cones?! Boo hoo!!

In this day and age, we hould pick our battles carefully and this just seems foolish, petty and a rule put in place by absolute moorons!!

I completed disagree! This parent had a responsibility to the league and to her son so show up for her shift or find a replacement for her shift. This is not Punishment for the child from the league. It was from his MOTHER! This is her fault not the leagues fault. This is a big problem for leagues. Some parents will not do what is needed and few parents always get stuck doing it for them. Concession is how leagues make money to operate and if the parents don’t help out there will be no league. She punished her son so she should explain to him it was her fault he had to set out…don’t blame the league or the coaches just do what you say you will do and work the one shift!

It appears, some adults have taken the simple game of baseball that should be fun for kids and turned it into psych game against kids and parents.

Parents and coaches should have more interest in the kids and teaching them how to play the game rather than teaching them about an illegal contract clause. Check it out, a child who cannot legally sign a contract cannot be held to a contract term.

Ask a lawyer you bunch of dummies!

What a disgrace!!! never punish the kid because of the actions of the parent!!!!!!!!!. I’ve been involved in little league for 14 years and this may top them all.
I learned that lesson myself many years ago when I benched a player for showing up late to find out later that his parents were in the midst of a bitter divorce and neither took the time to get him to the game on time - shame on me for that.
    Rethink your policy

I am President of a Little League. I guarantee LL does not support this by-law from this particular league. The only reason to “suspend” a player is for THEIR behavior, and that requires several steps and a Board vote to do so. While my snack bar revenue is important to the league, maintaining a kid’s love for the game is a heck of a lot more important. This Board needs to reassess the reason they are involved in LL. Their adult minds are completely out of touch. Look for other options to ensure your snack bar is staffed and get back to providing wholesome fun for the kids!

Anyone who thinks punishing someone for another person’s failure is a good idea has serious mental problems. All should be accountalbe for their OWN actions not for something out of their control. This is the result of the liberal brainwashing of our school children. They no longer are taught right and wrong. Is the woman suppossed to tell her boss go to hell “I’m leaving because my son’s coach said I have to be there”? It is a GAME! Children are suppossed to have FUN, not be scarred emotionally for something they didn’t DO. If the league needs money- have a bake sale, a fundraiser or give parents who can’t work the stand an option to give more money or raise it. Involve the kids in helping to raise the money. USE THE BRAIN GOD GAVE YOU PEOPLE!

How disgracefull it is to punish a child for his mothers problem. This Dave guy should be banished from being involved with kids and CPS should look at how he parents his own kids. I hope LL kick him out of thier organization. Shame on you Dave Shame Shame.

I completely agree… How self-righteous can those people be when punishing and shaming a poor 7 year old boy form playing BASEBALL?!

That is so wrong on so many levels. At my son’s ball field we pay a concession deposit of 50.00. When we work the concession we get the check back and if we don’t we lose it. How simple is that? The board of that park should be ashamed of itself.
