MySpace hoax mom indicted in teen’s suicide

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Looks like Megan Meier’s parents are getting their wish.

A 49-year-old Missouri mother has been indicted for fraudulently using MySpace to “cyber-bully” a teenage girl who committed suicide after she was tricked into believing she was being dumped by her online boyfriend.

Lori Drew, of O’Fallon, Missouri, was named in a federal indictment charging her with three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization and one count of conspiracy. She faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison. She has been summoned to appear in US District Court in Los Angeles in June.

The MySpace charade has drawn international ire since it was first reported that Drew posed as a 16-year-old boy on the social networking site and drew 13-year-old Megan Meier into a romantic relationship. After feigning interest in the girl for several weeks, Drew and several unnamed co-conspirators, abruptly broke off the relationship, telling her: “You’re a shitty person, and the world would be a better place without you in it.”

Substitute teacher arrested for being drunk at school

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Last week we had a teacher smoking pot at school, now we have one getting hammered.

A substitute middle school teacher suspected of being drunk in class was too intoxicated to complete a sobriety test and was arrested, authorities said.

Thomas Brownlee, 56, was in a classroom Tuesday with students and another staff member for about 20 minutes, Richardson school district spokesman Tim Clark said. Another teacher suspected Brownlee was drunk and told a campus police officer.

A Dallas police report states that Brownlee “had slurred speech, breath smelling of an alcoholic beverage and bloodshot eyes.”

The officer stopped issuing a sobriety test out of concern for Brownlee’s safety, according to the report.

Court dismisses lawsuit against 1-year-old

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

In this day and age, we’re surprised it didn’t wind up going all the way to the Supreme Court.

Richard White says he was shocked when he got a subpoena in the mail requiring his 1-year-old son, Jacy, to appear in Rockingham County General District Court next Tuesday over a $391 chiropractor bill.

Neither of Jacy’s parents was named in the lawsuit, which has been dismissed at the request of the plaintiff.

Shortly after his son’s birth in April 2007, White says he took Jacy to the chiropractor. He suspects that when the family moved, the office updated records for everyone but Jacy.

Girl’s twin inside her body

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Doctors in Greece made an interesting discovery when operating on a girl for abdominal pain — her embryonic twin. We could see how that might cause a bit of soreness…

Andreas Markou, head of the paediatric department at Larissa hospital, said that doctors examining the girl found she had a growth.

They operated to remove what they believed to be a tumour. But a biopsy showed it was a six-centimetre long embryo with hair, eyes and a spine but no brain.

The hospital said the girl’s family does not want to be identified.

Teen charged with mother’s death

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

A 16-year-old in Baltimore County has charged with the first-degree murder of his mother.

Lewin Carlton Powell III was arrested and charged as an adult last night with killing Donna Rosemarie Campbell-Powell, 39, an employee of the county Office of Budget and Finance, according to Baltimore County court documents. Powell was also charged with the attempted murder of his father, who goes by the same name.

Police said Campbell-Powell apparently died of blunt force trauma after she was hit multiple times with a baseball bat. Bill Toohey, a police spokesman, said the boy and his mother argued over his performance in school shortly after he arrived home Tuesday afternoon.

Toddler busts drug smugglers

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn’t for you crazy toddlers.

A TODDLER unmasked an international drug smuggling operation and smashed its hopes of earning a six-figure profit when he tore open a neighbour’s parcel and found a bottle of “sweets”.

The two-year-old was, in fact, holding diazepam pills straight from Sri Lanka – and now, thanks to Kian Parlour’s discovery, tablet-trafficking couple Patricia Chubb and Gareth Jones, of Court Place, Tonypandy, face six years in jail between them.

Toddler who fell in Lake Michigan improving

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

A toddler who fell in Lake Michigan last month has been taken off his respirator and appears to be improving.

Lazar Ognjenovic, 2, was admitted to Children’s Memorial Hospital on April 18, but he has now been transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

The incident unfolded during a lakefront stroll with his grandfather when a strong wind blew the stroller into the water, officials said. A witness said the grandfather, who could barely swim, jumped in after the boy.

In a statement, the Ognjenovics requested that the public continue to honor their request for privacy “as Lazar enters the next steps toward rehabilitation.”

Father gets 30 years for son’s death

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

A “man” was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of his infant son by striking him so hard he crashed into a fish stand and died.

William J. Duncan II, 25, asserted in court, “I am not a monster. … I think I’m good enough to take care of kids.”

Duncan, who pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in March, admitted he was lying on the floor on May 23, 2006, with his son, William J. III on his chest when he pushed the child with “some force.”

“That angered and affronted me to hear (Duncan) describe himself as a good father,” Assistant Prosecutor Vincent Malfitano said after the court hearing. “This particular death is unexplainable. … It was completely pointless and senseless.”

One in eight kids have iPods stolen

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

“It’ll get stolen!” is the new “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

Research conducted by the Design Council showed that electronic gadgets such as MP3 players and mobile phones were common targets for thieves and muggers.

Nearly a third of 11-year-olds said they carried fashionable technological products worth over £200, with half putting the value of their gadgets at between £100 and £500.

The study said that one in three of the victims was actually using their mobile phone or MP3 player when it was stolen.

Polygamist sect mothers receive ultimatum

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Texas officials have told the mothers of the children rescued from a polygamist sect that they need to abandon some of their religious teachings or they will lose custody of their kids.

Some lawyers believe this could mean women would never be able to return to the Yearning for Zion ranch in Eldorado, and would have to choose between some of their beliefs and their children.

But other experts said adults who have tolerated underage “marriages” of girls to older men and apparently have cast out teenage boys might have forfeited all rights to raise their children – and are lucky to be given a shot at regaining their youngsters.

In advance of court hearings that begin Monday, Child Protective Services has drafted 10 goals and 14 tasks that parents will have to work toward to regain custody of their children.

Baby kidnapped from hospital

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

An Amber Alert has been issued for a 10-month-old boy who was allegedly kidnapped by his mother from a hospital in Orange, California.

Alakahi Thompson was taken from the hospital at 455 S. Main St. in Orange around 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect is identified as Ida Marybel Torres, a Latina who is 5 feet 4, 125 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Investigators say Torres also fled with her 5-year-old and 11-year-old children. It’s believed she is driving a rental car– a silver 2008 Chrysler Sebring, license plate 6AHA682, and may be headed for Kentucky.

The Sheriff’s Department said the boy’s father has legal custody of the child and Torres only has visitation rights.

Teen rape victim turns to YouTube for help

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

A teenager in Florida alleging she was raped is airing her plight on YouTube, after she didn’t see justice done in the court system.

“Hi, my name is Crystal … I need some help. I didn’t want to do it this way, but it’s the only way I know that’s going to work, that someone out there in the world is gonna listen to me.”

The teen, whom CNN interviewed but is not identifying by her last name, is among dozens of young people who are turning to social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace to talk about sexual assault.

For an online generation, the Web offers what traditional counseling does not. It’s a chance to communicate without having to face someone or fear their judgment. Some people are seeking legal advice and medical information, and many younger victims believe they can warn others about their accused attacker, counselors say.
