Teen burned in “blowtorch game”

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Thinking back on our own misguided youth, we may have had some incidences involving hairspray and a lighter. Fortunately we managed to escape without injury, unlike a boy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin:

A 14-year-old boy was transported to Aurora Medical Center Saturday with burns on more than a quarter of his body after a blowtorch game with another teenage boy, according to Capt. Mark Rusboldt of the Manitowoc Fire Department.

The injured boy, who was not identified, was later sent to Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Rusboldt said.

Monday, May 12th, 2008

In what appears to be an escalated domestic disturbance, a man in Romeoville, Illinois stabbed himself and an infant.

[The police] found a 25-year-old man with a self-inflicted stab wound to his stomach, police said. Next to him was a 1-month-old boy with “two superficial stab wounds” to the chest. Both were taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

The incident was under investigation early Monday and details of what led to the stabbings were not immediately released.

Abandoned baby found in Queens

Monday, May 12th, 2008

A month old infant wrapped in a blanket was found by woman on the doorstep outside her home in Queens, New York.

A black handbag was left next to the baby; the police did not say what, if anything, was in the bag.

It was about 10 p.m. when the Holly Avenue resident, a 24-year-old woman, found the baby and called the police. Officers and an ambulance responded, and the baby was taken to Flushing Hospital where she was admitted in stable condition.

Mom rescues toddler from river

Monday, May 12th, 2008

But it wasn’t her own toddler, rather the child of another mom who was at the same park.

Alison Nocero of Yuba City pulled a little boy — believed to be not much older than 2 — out of the Feather River on Sunday.

“Just as I got to him he went down (under water),” said Nocero, who jumped into the river fully clothed after seeing the top of the toddler’s head bobbing in the current.

The mother of the child did not even know her son was gone.

“She was very nonchallant,” Nocero said about the mother after returning her child and tellling her he had nearly drowned.

“She said she thought he was with his aunt.”

3 children, 2 adults found dead in Houston

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Police are trying to figure out what went on at a home in rural Houston where they found 5 bodies, including 3 children.

Although a .22 caliber rifle was found in the lap of an adult male, whose body was found on the porch, police declined to speculate on whether this might have been a murder-suicide, saying it was still early in their investigation. Besides the gun, shell casings were found around his body, police said.

Houston police Sgt. John Chomiak said investigators believed all five people lived in the home. Neighbors said the five people were a husband, wife and their three children.

Police did not immediately release the identities of the victims.

The bodies of a woman between 20 and 30 years old and a boy thought to be about 10 were found in one part of the home, Chomiak said.

The bodies of a boy thought to be between 3 and 5 and a girl believed to be between 4 and 6 were found in another part of the home, described by authorities as a simple wooden structure that was divided in the middle by the porch. A wooden fence and large trees in the front block a view of the home from the street.

Boy taken into custody to receive chemo

Monday, May 12th, 2008

A father in Canada is battling the Children’s Aid Society there who took his son into protective custody in order to give the child chemotherapy for his leukemia. The problem? Neither the boy or his family want the treatment.

A judge earlier ruled the boy is not capable of understanding the implications of refusing chemotherapy.

Two of Canada’s top pediatric oncologists have said he will die without the aggressive treatment.

The deeply spiritual youngster, who likes dancing, singing and writing stories, is to be released from hospital tomorrow after his treatment is finished, his father said. It is unclear if the CAS intends to place him in foster care or release him to his family.
