Boy finally takes off Brett Favre jersey — after over 4 years

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

We’ll be the first to admit we don’t have the patience for this kind of indulgence. That jersey would have been conveniently “lost” after the first month. And was this kid home schooled? We would have thought peer pressure would have made him shed his prized possession a long time ago.

David Witthoft finally shunned his Brett Favre jersey for a red shirt for the first time in 1,581 days.

The 12-year-old Ridgefield, Conn. boy wore the No. 4 jersey every day since receiving it as a gift for Christmas in 2003.

David’s father, Chuck Witthoft, says Monday that his son’s last day wearing the jersey was April 23 on his 12th birthday. Witthoft conceded his son was starting to become more concerned about his appearance after the jersey barely came down to his belt line.

Men rescue toddler from storm drain

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

A 21-month-old girl fell into a storm drain in Fall River, Massachusetts, but fortunately two heroes were there to spring into action and save her.

Bruce Hebert and Pedro Davila sprung into action after hearing the screams of the girl’s mother Saturday night.

The two used a lug wrench and a hammer to open the drain cover. Davila jumped in and retrieved the little girl who was face down in the water, the newspaper said.

Hebert administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the child started spitting up water.

Gene responsible for higher IQ in breastfed babies

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Research in Canada seems to prove the long asserted notion that breastfed infants have higher IQs — but only for those with certain genetics.

Scientists have identified a specific gene implicated in the link between breastfeeding and higher IQ in children, suggesting that biology — and not just socio-economics — is involved.

A study published Nov. 5 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found that a variant of a gene involved in metabolizing the fatty acids in breast milk determines whether children get an IQ boost from breastfeeding — on average as much as seven points.

Previous research has shown that breastfed children have higher IQs than those who were bottle-fed. But it wasn’t clear if the advantage was partly the result of other factors such as the mother’s own IQ or socio-economic status, said study author Avshalom Caspi. In Western countries, women from higher socio-economic groups are more likely to breastfeed, he explained.

His study controlled for the mother’s intelligence and social class, as well as for the children’s birth weight and gestational age (other factors known to influence intelligence).

Autistic kids’ parents more likely to have mental disorder

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

A new study purports that the parents of children with autism are twice as likely to have been hospitalized for a mental disorder. Is this getting scientists closer to proving some sort of genetic link?

The study looked at 1,237 children born between 1977 and 2003 who were diagnosed with autism before age 10. To be deemed autistic, the children all had to have received a diagnosis of autism disorder, Asperger Syndrome or pervasive developmental disorder.

Seventy-seven per cent of the children involved in the study were boys.

“These results support those of smaller studies that indicated an increase in psychiatric conditions among parents of children with autism, specifically schizophrenia, neurotic disorders and depression,” write the authors. “Identifying families with a propensity for rare psychiatric conditions may help uncover rare genes that contribute to the susceptibility of both disorders.”

Infant found dead at fairgrounds

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

The cleaning crew at a fairground in Millville, New Jersey made the grizzly discovery of a baby in a toilet tank. Officials are still trying to determine if the baby was full term or if it was an aborted fetus.

Investigators say an autopsy is needed to determine if the baby reached full term and was born alive or if it was still a fetus when it died.

A Cinco de Mayo celebration hosted by the Hispanic Business Association of South New Jersey was held at the fairgrounds on Sunday.

Police say they do not yet know the ethnicity of the baby or the circumstances under which it was abandoned.

Toddler drinks GHB

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Hey, kids, here’s a tip from your pals at MT — if you’re thirsty and your mama’s a dumbass crack whore, better just go get some water out of the faucet.

A 3-year-old girl was hospitalized, and her mother and a friend were arrested Sunday, after the girl drank from a bottle that contained GHB, commonly known as the date-rape drug.

Hospital officials in Chula Vista notified police just after 1 p.m. that the girl was suffering from a drug overdose, National City police Assistant Chief Manuel Rodriguez said yesterday.

The girl’s mother told police that she had been at a friend’s house on Wilson Avenue near 20th Street and was smoking drugs when her daughter became thirsty and asked for some water, Rodriguez said.

The friend handed the mother a bottle of clear liquid, which was given to the girl. The child soon began to vomit and lose consciousness, Rodriguez said.

Man rescues boy from pit bull

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Hey, don’t look at us, we don’t look for these pit bull stories on purpose. If someone has a “pug mauling child” story they want to send our way, feel free.

A boy has undergone three hours of surgery and required more than 100 stitches to close bite wounds inflicted by a pit bull.

Sean Bajwa, 11, was playing at the playground at Cedar Hills elementary at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday when a pair of pit bull dogs came charging at him and at least one of them pounced.

Jordan Slezak, 20, who lives near the school, was chatting with his mom when suddenly they heard the boy screaming. Looking out of his house to see a dog tugging at Bajwa’s leg, Slezak grabbed a bat, leapt over the fence in his bare feet and beat the pit bull back. Slezak had to crack the dog twice over the head before it let go of the child.

Pregnant policewoman requests light duty — DENIED

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

A pregnant female police officer in Ocean Township, New Jersey requested she be put on “light duty” — but the town officials said, “nuh, uh.”

Officer Sonia Henriques is concerned about putting her unborn child at risk and her doctor agrees. She is two months pregnant.

At a council meeting Monday night, Mayor William Larkin said the Monmouth County community should develop a policy to deal with a police officer’s pregnancy. Two of the department’s 62 officers are women.

Her union says management has told the decorated officer to stay on patrol or take an unpaid leave of absence.
