Colorado teacher accused of abusing a kid in class

Brian, look. You’re a young guy, probably just out of college, so really, it’s not too late to make a career change. Because I don’t think working with children is quite your thing.

A Delta high school English teacher punished a student who was late for class by ordering him to do push-ups and sit-ups and letting other students hit him when he failed to complete the exercise, police said Monday.

Brian Havel, 22, faces charges of child abuse in the case, which allegedly happened March 14, said Delta Police interim Chief Roger Christian. He said police began investigating after the student, who is 15 or 16-years-old, told his parents what happened.

Christian said Havel demanded that the student do a certain amount of push-ups or sit-ups in a set amount of time when he arrived late for class. Christian said the student either refused to do the exercise or didn’t finish in time.

This is crazy. I had this man as a teacher, and he wasn’t an abuser. Ya he did punish us physically, like if we were tardy, like the boy was, then he will tell you to do a certain amount of push-ups, or sit-ups-not seriously forcing you to finish the requested amount, also if you cussed or used any foul language in his class he would tell you to do wall-sits for a certain amount of time, but all of this never hurt anyone and it made students want to be more aware of what they were saying and to get to class on time. The boy was an annoying kid in which all the boys in the class were getting tired of, and he was starting things. So when he did something to make the class stay after school, one student suggested, “Well can’t we just hit him?” Havel replied in a joking manner, which totally matched his character;he was always joking and having fun, “I’m not looking.” Pretending to look away. That’s when some kids got up and hit the kid, and it was totally unexpected by Havel. He never expected them to take it seriously and never to hit him as hard as some of them did, which really wasn’t that hard, says the ones who hit him. It was a misunderstanding and a tiny error on Havel’s part. It was nothing to be fired over. The kid over reacted on behalf of his embarrassment. His first mistake and he is fired, but it wasn’t even worth it! He was a good man, and a great teacher. I miss him!

In asian countries (korea, japan), the teachers punish students with slaps to the palms or even pushups, when the students are late (this shows a disrespect to the teachers, other students, the school, and the whole idea of learning something new), don’t finish their homework or get unexpectedly low grades on tests (showing a lack of motivation for the gift of learning- in japan or korea, many schools are paid for by parents- not free like in the united states. not showing effort in school is also like disrespecting the effort of your parents who pay for you to get a good education), or other such ‘character’ flaws. In many cases, to breed teamwork, instructors will punish an entire class, if half of the students don’t do well- this is because everyone should be looking out for one another. Like in the military, or dare I say it… in a family.

Serious offenses, gets you kicked out of the school, but in most cases, because the koreans/japanese usually have strict discipline in the schools, there is less student politics, and more studying and teamwork. I like this Brian instructor, and believe that more American instructors should be like him. American schools are completely out of control, and the education system is a mockery. There is a saying that if you bring ruin to your own house, you inherit the wind. If you help tear down the authority and respect of instructors, you are only teaching your children that it’s okay to turn around and do the same thing to your parents.

Of course, it doesn’t help that in America instructors are molesting students, either…

    What a mess.
