Parents may be charged in failed faith healing
The parents of an 18 month old who opted to pray instead of getting her routine treatment that would have likely prevented her death, may face charges of manslaughter.
In cases like these, it has always been MT’s position to place these stories under the child abuse category, because that’s what they are.
The parents of a baby girl who died from a treatable illness left jail late Friday night after posting bail.
Twenty-eight-year old Carl Worthington and 25-year old Raylene Worthington surrendered to police Friday. They face manslaughter and criminal mistreatment charges related to the death of their 15-month old daughter Ava Worthington.
The baby died in early March from an illness that doctors say could have been treated with antibiotics. Authorities believe the parents opted to pray over the baby rather than treat her with medicine.

if the law is going to have a real impact on faith healers then not only should the parents be arrested and charged with manslaughter so should all those adults that were present and participating. this is not an act that the two young people took on by themself. no, this is a culture that is interwoven tightly and the young people are following what they always have been taught. while the parents are the ones legally resposnible so too should all those adults that encouraged the parents and participated in the prayers and advising the parents not to take the child to the doctor. when a child or person is sick from this group everyone is called to pray. the house was full of people days before the child died. if we want a change we need to make all adults accountable for this action and others that may be like minded. this is not a decision that one person or one couple made. to break this way of thinking we need to address the bigger picture.

You can’t believe everything the news says- especially in cases like this. These people don’t try to force their religion on others, so I don’t think anyone should be bothering them. Just let these people be! As for the child abuse comment, that’s just uncalled for- you know nothing about their church or them. It’s easy for someone to say that what she died from MAY have been prevented- but others who did rely on doctors still died. And I think the key word here is MAY have been prevented- that doesn’t mean anything.

Ann- I live in the county that these people live in. No one has ANY right to deny medical attention to another human being who can’t provide it for themself! Are you saying that if this were an adult and let’s say… disabled… it would be ok for them to not see a doctor if they were so sick that they couldn’t breathe and had a high fever?!!!! PLEASE. If you are sick and get progressively worse… don’t you try and resolve it with 20th century medicine? We don’t live in the 1800’s when doctors also were responsible for caring for your livestock, etc.

Ann-are you one of them? A 14 month old cannot decide for themselves. I believe in prayer, and don’t ever stop praying. Take your children to the doctors. I know people in that church and heard of 2 grown men when they walked in and saw the baby they walked out and left because they were sick to their stomachs. Why the authorities weren’t called, I don’t know. Autopsy said she had pneaumonia, treatable with antibiotics. My only prayer now is that those parents suffer as much as their baby did and they sat there like MONSTERS and watched it happen. People with a heart don’t do that, to me it sounds like the work of the devil. I know the Bible says we are not to judge so I pray for God’s blessing on those doing his work and Gods’ curses on those He knows is doing the work of the Devil. Bob has a point, not only should the parents be prosecuted, everyone who was present at her death should be held accountable. They won’t change their cult. 2 months later that baby’s 16 yr old uncle died of a preventable cause too.

Ann: God Bless You !
I was starting to think that I was the only one who felt that way.
both state and federal law guarantees freedom of religion, and even tho I don’t agree with that religion (or any OTHER’s religion, for that matter), that doesn’t give me (or anyone else) the right to say that they “can’t believe” how they do.
and doctors are AGAINST THEIR RELIGION.
end of story.
Heather:
have you ever heard (in that bible of yours), “judge not, lest ye BE judged” ?
I think YOU are the “monster”.
you’re willing to bring down “the wrath of God” on people YOU BELIEVE to be “wrong”.
how about, “vengence is Mine, sayeth the Lord”.. ?
or, “take the PLANK out of your OWN eyes, before picking the SPLINTER out of another’s” ?
YOU don’t KNOW what those people are going thru !
they’ve had their baby die, are facing prison, have had MOUNTAINS of hate mail directed to them, and I’m sure are facing a “crisis of faith” because they BELIEVED that God would heal their child and didn’t.
and that’s just for starters.
you’re willing to condemn them because “they don’t believe” in YOUR precious religion.
if your religion is SO perfect, so “right”, then why don’t people instantly believe like YOU do, the moment they hear about it ?
if it’s the “eternal truth”, then it should be obvious and undeniable, right ?
