British teacher sentenced in Sudan over teddy bear controversy

Lest I be victim of some Jihad, I think this story just speaks for itself and the tolerant religion/culture of Islam. Muslims need to speak out about this. The time is now!

A British primary school teacher arrested in Sudan faces up to 40 lashes for blasphemy after letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested at at Khartoum’s Unity High School yesterday, and accused of insulting the Prophet of Islam.

Her colleagues said that they feared for her safety after reports that groups of young men had gathered outside the Khartoum police station where she was taken and were shouting death threats.

The Unity school is a Christian-run but multi-racial and co-educational private school that is popular with Sudanese professionals and expatriate workers.

Yes, Muslims are to be feared. This type of action is not found in the Christian world…at least not this century.

I think Shariah law and extremist behavior insults the Prophet Muhammad. Shariah law is teaching these children to be afraid of their religion, and creating a divide in which they will not be able to experience, let alone understand, a loving, compassionate and just God. I cannot image the trauma and guilt these small children will have to suffer after knowing their teacher, who is well liked, has been thrown in jail and will face a lashing for a class project, in which the name of the teddy bear was popularly voted on. Instead of teaching the children anything positive Shariah law is raising them to be bullies, and encouraging violence. No wonder so many kids growing up in extremist countries become terrorists or suicide bombers! There is no innocense or independant thought allowed. It is acceptable, even encouraged, to use violece, threats and intimidation to assert power and control over others. Survival becomes based on domination. Truth is, if these extremists did not have violence, they would not have power. Obviously, they don’t value education. They cannot relate or communicate to others. And they are afraid of a teddy bear. I don’t believe any honorable prophet would condone a religion based on violence and ignorance. I don’t believe any honorable prophet would allow a well-qualified, respected teacher to be jailed and beaten; effectively denying the next generation the education and skills they need to succeed. And I don’t believe any honorable prophet would want the streets to run with blood, Muslims killing each other, killing babies and innocent people in the name of “holy” war. What is the point of having religion when you are so willing to commit evil? Extremism and Shariah law is the real offense to Muhammed.

I think the real problem is the way that Islam is misinterpreted and misunderstood by Muslims themselves. Nowhere in the Holy Qur’an does it permit the use of force or violence for any purpose. Unfortunately, the teachings are manipulated, twisted and read out of context for other purposes. No religion in the world condones violence, and in the same way, neither does Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him), himeself and the Muslims were severely persecuted and harassed on a daily basis, but they tolerated the violence for 13 years. In fact, instead of fighting back, they left the city to escape the torture. Extremists need to learn to live by the true peaceful teachings of Islam and the Prophet. The authentic teachings of Islam teach tolerance, but unfortunately people who do not understand their own religion practice intolerance. Similarly, as extremists need to learn to live peacefully and let others live peacefully, non-Muslims must understand that it is not Islam that is at fault, it is the minorty of extremists who claim or appear to represent the entire 1.6 billion Muslims around the world. Just because the media chooses to show what some Muslims are doing wrong, this does not mean that All 1.6 billion Muslims are like this.
