Infant Mylicon recalled

Posted November 11, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Oh how we relied on Infant Mylicon for our ultra-gassy baby. Fortunately we’re past that stage, because Merck Pharmaceuticals has issued a nationwide recall for the drops, due to the risk of metal fragments in the liquid. What, do they make it in the same factory as Strawberry Quik?

The recall specifically is for two lots of Infants’ Mylicon Gas Relief Dye Free 1 oz. size: lot numbers SMF007 and SMF008, expiration date 09/10. Parents are being urged to stop using the product immediately and to either dispose of it or contact Merck for a replacement or refund.

Infant cold and cough medications recalled

Posted October 11, 2007 at 8:33 pm

OK, this is a new one on me, but pharmaceutical makers have decided to recall their OTC cold and cough remedies that had previous been recommended for children under 2 not because there is really anything inherently dangerous about them, but rather because some parents are too dumb to follow the dosage directions. Read more details on this baby medication recall here.

Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water recalled

Posted September 21, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Just because it’s labeled “herbal” or “natural” or “organic” doesn’t always mean it’s 100% safe:

The Food and Drug Administration warned parents Thursday to avoid Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water-Apple Flavor, a liquid herbal supplement for baby colic, as it could be contaminated.

The FDA conducted lab tests that confirmed the presence of Cryptosporidium, a parasite that can cause diarrhea and intestinal infections, in unopened bottles of apple-flavored Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water, health officials said.

One 6-week-old baby from Minnesota could be sick from the product, a warning posted Sept. 10 on the FDA’s website says.

Bottles affected have the lot code “26952V” printed on it, with an expiration date of October 8th 2008 (thanks for the heads up, J Cassidy!). Parents are advised to stop using the product and dispose of it immediately.
