When did Fritos become a filling?

Postby julymom on Sun Apr 17, 2005 10:25 pm

Has anyone noticed how many things have Fritos corn chips as a filling? I've seen ads for Frito pie, Frito wraps, Frito salads, Frito burritos (I like saying that one  ). When did they stop being an item on their own, and become a filling? Is it any wonder Americans are getting fatter and fatter? We're putting chips INSIDE other foods.

When did Fritos become a filling?

LOL, I don't even like Fritos, but Frito pie is pretty damn yummy  It's just like chili with cheese and Fritos on top. I think using Fritos as a "filling" is a southwest thing.

In defense of the "Frito filling", haven't people been crumbling potato chips on all sorts of picnic fare in the southeast for eons? Different casserole things, and chicken and the like?

Oooh, I didn't know it had become a filling, but thanks for pointing it out! I love those fritos scoops with black bean dip.

I used to make taco salad, and instead of crumbling tortilla chips on top, I used fritos. I know, I know, like totally wrong, but yummy!

I remember when I was young and my mom was going through some weird phase she made a frito breakfast dish. It was fritos with eggs, chili and cheese mixed it. It sounds bad but as a child I loved it!!!!

I have never eaten fried twinkies but I have eaten fried oreos. Horrible for you buy very good tasting. Fried chocolate, can't be that bad when it makes you so happy. 8)

Fried Twinkies and Fried Oreos? Blech! Sounds awful. Fried pickles, though, now that's just plain good.
I did know about putting Fritos on top of chili, but never IN a food, such as the Frito Wrap (from Sonic I think) and the Frito Burrito (can't remember where that's from). It just sems weird. They're a side item, not a filling!

Oh, Sonic has the awesome Frito pies! You gotta try one! When we lived in Texas, I loved Sonic. Their food is so bad for you, but it is totally yummy.

We saw the fried snickers bars at the state fair here. I don't know, they don't even look that appetizing.

I would eat a fried snicker, depending on what the batter consisted of. I know the fried oreos that I have eaten and dipped in pancake batter before frying. It is really good. The oreo melts and it all tastes like cake. I don't think a fried pickle would be quite to my liking. How does that work anyway. Would'nt it lose all of it's crunch due to the moisture from the oil, and the water inside the pickle itself? The crunch is the best part of a pickle.

eeeewe...all of this sounds so YUCKY to me!!! Guess it's my locale. california is all about 'fresh' food. I can't remember the last time I ate something fried! Unless you count potatoe chips. but even those I eat like 4 times a year.

OH, wait, I do love sweet and sour pork, they fry the port first!

I dunno....I just can't imagine what a fried snickers would taste like. The frito's dont sound so bad though.... I can understand that as a topping to a casserole or something.

growing up I LOVED bbq fritos! yum yum yum...I never see those anymore.

They fry pickle slices, not whole pickles. I don't eat much fried food, because it's bad for you, but, man I love fried pickles. We've made them at home too. We take dill pickle chips, and dip them in tempura batter and fry them for a few minutes until they are golden. You've never tasted anything like it. Amazing!
I don't think I could eat any kind of desert food fried (except fried ice cream and that's about once every 3-5 years). It just seems weird.

Fried dill pickles rock! I have had them in spears, but most places do slices and they are better. If you are ever lucky enough to find yourself in Oxford Mississippi, you must eat at Ajax. they have the best southern food in the country and their fried pickles are the best. mmm, Ajax. I have been dying to go back there to eat, but it's like an hour from here.

Oh, now see, an hour each way wouldn't deter me from going to my favorite place to eat all the time. Perhaps that's why I'm carrying this spare tire.

We really should go more. It's the kids. If it were just the two of us, we'd go all the time. Not just for Ajax, but for all the awesome readings at Square Books and off Square Books. The kids Square Books (Square Books Too, maybe?) is great though for hanging out with the little ones. Not to mention Rowan Oak (Faulkner's estate). Plus the great music, there as well as in Clarksdale (as in "I went doen to the crossroads, got down on my knees..."). There is really some cool stuff going on around there. When Elvis Costello recently played here at this tiny bar, he talked about recording in Clarksdale.

I say when Melissa moves to MS and gets settled, we all meet up in Oxford! :D
