So we had EI come over to the house to do intake paperwork on our son, whose fine motor skill are slightly behind than that of his sister (he did not qualify in the end...sigh).
When she asked when we took the twins off the bottle we said that we give them sippys in the afternoon, but that's it. She then told us that we must get militant and get them off the bottle cold turkey. Since then the twins are NOT happy.
It has been a screaming match in stereo and the sippys have become missiles at the dinner table.
I really need some advice, encouragement...tell me this is going to pass!! |

How old are they again? For some reason I think they just turned 1?
Cold turkey is so hard! Can't they just have a bottle at bedtime at least, or whichever bottle they loved the most? I dont see how just one a day could hurt but obviously I am no expert.
Either way the kids will adjust eventually, it's probably easier to take it away earlier rather than later when they get even more opinionated.... Do they have pacifiers or anything else they suck on?? |

Have you tried the sippy's with the soft spout? I know Avent makes one, but they are pricey and leak after a while. Wal-Mart makes a cheap one ($1.27) with a soft spout, that you can just toss if it leaks. Cooper refused to take a hard spout sippy, especially when he was teething-those hard spouts hurt their teeth and gums. He still (at 3) uses a sippy for milk in the mornings, because he likes to drink his milk while watching his morning shows, and I don't want him spilling it all over the play room. Shows how IP I am, doesn't it? A 3yo with a sippy watching TV! Quick, call CPS!
Anyway, maybe they'll do better with the soft spout sippy? Good luck! |

| I can understand getting kids off a bottle older than 1 year old but why sippies? I still use a sippy cup! (A sports bottle but it is really the same thing!). Were you given a reason? |

Regarding getting the kids off the bottle cold turkey is that it will be easier getting them to transition now rather than later. Something about the terrible twos...
They are using the Nubby brand. The nip is a nice 'chewy' silicone that does not spill and they need to bite down in order for it to work. However if tossed hard enough the tops will pop off We tried the Gerber (handles never lined up with the nip...ugh!), First Years el Cheapo (dripped like crazy and Lloyd could not hold it at the time since he couldn't use this thumbs)
They also advised that when I can spend more time is to put a tablespoon of their favorite beverage in a real cup (handles OK) to try and get them to drink w/o getting drowned or soaked.
Finally they also said using the cup with the attached straw is considered acceptable; damned if I know why.
Thanks for your thoughts, will keep you up to date. ::duck:: |

It's something about the muscles they use to suck out of a straw being ok but having a sippy is not as good. I forget the details. When I give Molly a straw sippy she likes to sprinkle the drink all over the floor. Good times. |

I know I've heard all the crap about sippy cups and blah blah blah. Ds still uses his sippy for milk - he has always preferred the Avent I think because the spout is longer and softer than others. We went through every kind of sippy until we landed on those. He drinks other things in different ways. Sports bottles, straw, drinking straight from a small cup.
Because it took him so long to start gaining weight appropriately I let him keep the bottle for a long time - I mean well into 2 years. I think we finally got off it at about 2 1/2. He never took a pacifier or sucked his thumb so I guess that was his thing. We have started discussing that it is about time to give up the sippy but I don't see me doing it until after Christmas sometime.
Good Luck! |

Walmart sells these cheap sippy cups singly that have a soft silicone spout, and the lids screw on rather than just snap on. They are sort of bottle-like.
Personally, I think that sounds more like parenting advice than medical/theraputic advice. If it's about ease of transition and not muscle or coordination development, that's for you to deal with. I would go with your instinct. To me, it sounds the same as saying babies should be off the breast at a year--just arbitrary. |

That's what I thought too when I read the post! Just sounded like parenting advice to me!
I wonder if you could just transition them, you know cups most of the time and the bottle when they like it most (like at dinner so they aren't upset). I mean at dinner the kids need to focus on eating, not being upset!
I had both of my kids go straight to regular cups, no sippy's. Aaron is not yet two and drinks out of a cup just fine. It's messy in the beginning, but worth it. Why wean them off the bottle, to just have to wean them off a sippy later?
I never did anything with my kids cold turkey. When weaning from the breast it was a transition. When learning to drink out of a cup, it was a transition. Same for potty training, learning to read, everything you can come up with for kids! It's all about transitioning. I think in most circumstances it is just cruel to do something cold turkey with kids, I mean it's not like they are addicted to cigs for goodness sake. It's *just* a bottle, and they won't be drinking from them forever. |

Exactly! I know reasoning behind not using them if you are having speech problems or if you have dental problems, but my kids both still use sippys. Damn if I'm walking around cleaning up all the spilled juice and sour milk. BARF! It's bad enough cleaning up after the leaky ones!
I do have to say I won't be one bit sorry to throw all our sippy's in the trash. They SUCK! I fucking hate washing them and keeping all the stupid parts. THey always get moldy and nasty. They always fall out of the cabinet and knock each over causing a domino effect. Wanna here something funny? When I first started using sippys with Jack I didnt' know you had to take out the plastic stopper to wash them ROAR! You should have seen it when I finally figured it out LOL! BARF! |

Since Michael is only 3 1/2 months old, we haven't gotten him to drink out of a cup yet
But...I have friends with a 22 month old and they taught their son to drink from a regular cup by starting him with just a little liquid in the cup and they would give it to him in the bathtub at first. That way if he made a big mess it was easier to clean it up. Sounds a little strange, but still a good idea if you are worried about messes. |

That's exactly the cup I was talking about!!! Cooper uses them for milk only in the mornings. He uses a regular cup at meals at the table and cup with a straw for just wandering around the house. He drinks water all day long, and there's no way I'm letting him have a regular cup to just walk around. I'd have wet spots everywhere! Oh, he also loves water bottles with the sports cap! LOVES them! He's incredibly careful with them, and never spills. |

I weaned Lauren off a bottle after a year due to her ped's advice and I was lucky, because it took all of 2 days. She only wanted it at night though. And at 2.5 years, I weaned her off of the sippy. I weaned her off her paci at 18 mos.
I basically started by not offering it and she was cool with it. None of the weaning for me was an issue.
I wanted to use a regular cup, because I wanted to enforce the cup stay at the kitchen table vs being dragged around the house.
I agree w/the others, the advice sounded more parenting than anything. |
