| Did any of Jon and Kate's kids suck their thumbs? I don't remember ever seeing it, and I would think with that many, at least 1 of them would do it. My daughter still sucks hers, and she's 3. I'm worried abut her teeth, but I've heard that it doesn't really start affecting the alignment of them until they're 4 years old. Telling her to stop sure doesn't work, but if it had been a pacifier she wouldn't still be allowed to have it. I can't take her thumb away though. Any ideas? I've tried vinegar. She takes off bandaids. Has anyone here ever had a thumb loving kiddo? |

As a kid, I always bit my nails so my mom rubbed Clove Oil (the same stuff you'd use on a toothache) on my fingers. I hated it!!!! It worked.... until we ran out of the stuff.
As for what you said about pacifiers vs. thumbs, I've always been thankful that my kids never sucked their thumbs for that very reason. |

I was always really happy none of mine sucked their thumbs. Then I had the last one and my luck ended. Clove oil is a good idea. I might try that. Thanks. |

| I know I was a thumbsucker when I was a young child but I only did it when I had my blanket. I know my parents took it away and the thumb sucking went away with it. I know my neice is a big thumbsucker. She just turned 4 and they try everything with her. The mainly try to point it out to her every time she is doing it. Especially infront of people and she gets embarrased. She has cut down a lot on it because she is now aware that people are seeing her do it and she knows she really shouldnt be doing it. I dont know if thats any good advice but its something. lol. |

I'm hoping that's what will happen with her...that she'll get embarrased and stop. I'm hoping and praying..cuz I don't want to have to buy braces later. Just wish she'd had a paci. |

Kennedy,
I have seen people wrap the thumb in guaze and bring the wrap up around the wrist so that it can't be taken off. It's got to stay on for a few days and boy will she be mad but I've seen it work. My grandson sucks his thumb and I'm trying that very soon. |

I sucked my thumb I believe until I was 4. I did have braces as a kid but I do remember the orthodontist telling my mom that I didn't need braces because I sucked my thumb. I do know in some cases thumb sucking can cause teeth to grow outwards but I do know mainly that kids get braces due to teeth not coming in aligned correctly. My orthodontist pointed out that if my dentist had taken proper xrays of my teeth he could of fixed my permanent teeth from coming in croaked if he had pulled the baby teeth that were in the way. I think thats a big major problem that causes the inevitable of braces. lol. |

I think on the dentist epi that Kate said there was atleast one thumb sucker.
As for the dental thing, I had a daughter that used a paci...are you ready...duh, duh, duuhhh...8 years old (but just at bed after age 4 - as if that makes it okay ;o). My excuse was that if had been the thumb, she would still suck, so I didn't take it away. Okay now that you're gasping...our pediatric dentist told me that the thumb would have been a better option because there are appliances that would deter the thumb sucking, but with pacis there was nothing. A good ole reward chart and a new Build-A-Bear worked for us ;o).
As for the braces, my oldest, who never sucked her thumb, and only used a paci til she was about 6 months old, had to have braces. I think I've just succumbed to the fact that I will have 3 sets of braces whether they suck anything or not |
