I'm hoping for an ultrasound, but I'm not sure I'll get one. I'm not positive about my LMP date, and I think they will want to date the pregnancy well for the c/s, so my fingers are crossed. I can't wait to have my mind eased knowing that everything looks okay and its not twins. |

Great appointment! I like the doctor a lot. They gave me a full work-up, a pap and an ultrasound. The doctor said of the u/s that she is 90% sure there is only one in there. My dates were right on, everything measured perfectly. Heartbeat was in the 130s.
I had to have the first (of many, I'm sure ) diabetes test. Nobody ever accepts that I just have big babies -- I had to do it 3 times with Owen, passing with flying colors each time! So anyway. I'm a teensy bit concerned because I had to drink that crap on a completely empty stomach and I was feeling whoozy when it was done with... does having an empty tummy affect the results at all (PP? I know you are an expert here!). When the nurse did the blood draw she tested a drop on a diabetic meter and she said it was just below where it needed to be and that the meter tends to run on the high side, so that's good I think.
The doc wants to do the c/s at 38 weeks, which concerns me. I'd be more comfortable with 39. She also wants to do an amnio the week before to make sure the baby is developed enough, and I am not game for that at all. I told her my concerns and she said we could discuss it later. I won't be having an amnio, that's all there is to say about that.
All in all it was great though! I think I'll be very happy with them. |

Yea for a good u/s!!
Why would they do a c/s at 38 weeks anyway? If the baby's big, it wouldnt be a problem coming thru an incision, right? I would definitely wait until 39 weeks too. I was even nervous about being induced at 39w5d with Kate! (not gonna do that again).
I wasnt aware that amnios were usually done before scheduled Cs? |

I don't think it's that unusual to do scheduled c/s at 38 weeks. That was standard for our area of CA, and actually my SIL had all her c/s at 37 weeks.
The concern is that the woman will go into labor, and they don't want to have to deal with that -- but in my case labor is not something to even be worried about at all.
I have heard of amnios being done, I don't think that is so uncommon -- but I will not have one. Period. |

Amnios late in the pregnancy have just about no risk. The ONLY risk at that point is that it could cause you to go into labor, and at that point, that isn't really a risk since they can just take you into an OR and do a c-section right then and there.
I was offered a late-term amnio with my pg with Liz, they can tell if the baby's lungs are developed enough to do a c/s early at that point. I refused and went ahead the extra week. I was 2 days shy of my due date with Alex, Katie had her scheduled c/s at 38 weeks and Liz's was scheduled for 39 weeks.
I don't think having an empty stomach affects the results of the 1 hour GTT since they're just doing the end result anyway. At the three hour, you're fasting, so the first reading--the fasting reading--does matter. Other than that, they just are measuring how your body processes the glucose. |

| here's a stupid question I've always wanted to know the answer to -- why when having an amnio does the needle not cause the fluid to all drain out of the amniotic sac? In my head I imagine this water balloon deflating and filling the abdomen with fluid... how come that doesn't happen? |

HB, Congrats on seeing the *one* baby! What is your exact due date then? I won't have an u/s until Sept 6th. I don't know what my due date is. You found out u were pg before me right?
The glucose test will be okay even if you are on an empty stomach. If your cells are taking up the glucose normally, you'll pass that test! My doctor always says you can eat or fast. But I know my sis used to eat her sugary cereals and fail the one hour but then pass the 3 hr. So I have a feeling eating really sugary, carby food would make your blood sugar higher along with the glucola. I actually was wondering if my doctor would give me trouble if I declined the test this time around. 2 babies that were not big, no hx of GD, I mean why even take the test I'm sure someone will give me a reason! |
