Not to be completely morbid, but it doesnt do much good for my kids to be immune if my husband and I and most other healthy adults we know will not survive to care for them. Last I read, a vaccine was years away anyhow so this would not even be an issue if we are hit in the next several years.
What people really need to do is make sure they have the ability to quarrantine themselves in their homes to reduce exposure. I think the recommended timeframe is to prepare for 1-3 mos worth of food, water and supplies. If the flu does hit, supply lines to stores will be interrupted and that may cause a huge problem.
Can you tell I'm reading up on this? I am so fucking paranoid! |

| DCH, my argument is that small children and their parents or guardians should be higher on the list. |

Well that idea I can get behind!
I think it's really a non-issue though. The bird flu will have to mutate in order to have human-human transmission and then once it's mutated, any vaccine we have already may or may not work. New ones takes years to formulate and test. We're all screwed! |

Unfortunately my young children have old parents (we're both over 40)! But I need to get on the ball trying to prepare for being in seclusion I guess. I agree that it seems odd that in this situation older folks are among the first to be protected. Even healthy people are very vulnerable, right? |

Yes, actually they say that the most vulnerable are those that have healthy, strong immune systems. The strong immune response to the virus is what actually causes people to die- I forget the exact details but something about the body producing lots of gunk (for lack of a better word) that gets into the lungs and suffocates people. |
