| What are good chores for a 1st grader to do on a daily basis and a weekly basis? I can't do the whole making the bed deal because Holden has a bunk bed, but he doesn't do anything, mostly because I can never figure out what I have the patience to let him do. Any ideas? |

Hmmm, well, Katie helps me fold/put away clothes when I do laundry She can fold wascloths and towels, and she is responsible for putting her own clothes away where they belong. Katie sets the table for dinner (getting out condiments or other things, too). She clears her space after dinner (stacking dishes by the sink) and she puts away the condiments or whatever. She dusts (which isn't really a chore, I guess, since she loves it so much) and washes windows and mirrors with windex, and she feeds the cats and gets their water.
Is Holden tall? Can he maybe put dishes away from the dishwasher? Alex does that. Katie can't where we put the plates and cups, so we have her do the silverware. |

Ah, perfect. That's exactly what I was looking for. Putting away his clothes is a good one and washing the windows, and feeding the cat. I'm lovin' it!
Now, why couldn't I think of those things by myself. Wait! Don't answer that! (I know it's tempting, LOL.) |

Absolutely! My 2 yo loves to help dust and windex. He thinks it's a hoot when we pray the stuff and laughs when we hand him a towel to wipe it off.
Ds is learning to pick up his toys and put them in the toy baskets now. Holden can be responsible for that (if he's not already). What else can he do? He can maybe empty small waste baskets into a larger one, put the silverware into the dishwasher when it's dirty and put it in the drawer after it's clean, put his clothes away, bring his hamper to the laundry room when it's time to wash, help sort darks and lights (hey, there's some learning involved!), help dad wash the car (you know, if dad does that), pick up small limbs and trash in the yard before it gets mowed, and help take care of pets (if you have any). Okay that's all I can come up with, but you should be able to pick several of those for him to do. Now, here's the real question: does he get compensated for these chores? Ds helped my mom empty the garbage and put the dirty clothes into the washer (he thought it was fun to throw them in) and he got $1 for his piggy bank! The next day he helped Papa pick up limbs in the yard before it was moved, and he got $2! I would never have gotten that much when I was his age. Of course, I wasn't the perfect grandchild, so that could be why. |
