OK, all this religious right talk reminded me of something...
Jessica identifies herself as an agnostic. To me, that signifies someone that basically says, "hey, us puny humans really can't know if there is or isn't a higher power, so I prefer to stay noncommittal." (I refer to them as chicken-shit atheists, but that's just me, sorry Elizabeth )
Anyway, Jessica disagrees with this definition. Mainly because she actually *does* firmly believe in a higher power, she just doesn't buy into any of the organized religion's versions of him/her/it.
So the question is, is she, in fact, an agnostic? And if not, then what the hell is the word for it?
Is there a theologian in the house? |

I was under the impression that an agostic doesn't believe in anything, God or otherwise. If that is so, then I wouldn't say Jessica is agnostic.
Now you've got me scratching my head. |

Okay, I was obviously misinformed.
By dictionary.com's definition I'd say that agnostic would describe that standing very accurately. |

Yes, that would be an atheist.
According to the definition you posted, an agnostic doesn't profess to believe or *not* believe -- it's a statement that god is an unknown. I don't think that would apply to someone that is convinced in some sort of god. |

| Well, there are many different ideas about a "higher power" that are outside the Judeo-Christian concept of God. If Jess really believes in a higher power, then I don't think she'd be considered agnostic. |

Thank you all for helping be to close in on my identity crisis.
I now think I'm a religious independent. |

OOOH, you just might be a religious liberal!

This might be the only thing we believe in common. Although I would *not* recommend walking into a UU church and announcing you're a Republican who's in favor of the war in Irag, lol.
OK, I'm going back to my break now.
(edited to add the "not." hmm, was that a Freudian slip or what? ) |

| I dunno, actually maybe "flip flopper" (to quote someone), may be the best title, since it seems not too long ago, Jess professed pretty believable faith in Christianity, but now I guess not. |

Uh, no, that's not accurate. I do believe in God and I was brought up as an Evangelical-Protestant, so I do identify with the "Christian" God, but I don't go to church, nor do I find myself belonging to any sort of church. My step-mother, who raised me since I was 12 is Jewish and my father has only been to church to attend weddings. My mother is an Evangelical Christian.
I have never changed my stance on this and actually admitted to Scott before he posted this thread, that "agnostic" was incorrect, so please do not pretend to know what my beliefs are unless you ask me directly. Thanks! |

I'm sure you think you're being really, really clever here -- going way, way back into the past to dig this up. I have nothing to hide. I did try out a church in our neighborhood and I still didn't feel as if I belonged, so it lasted a few Sundays and I was back to where I began. I just don't seem to like organized religion, no matter how much I try. <shrugs> I would love to find a church that I felt comfortable in, but so far, no luck. I'm not sure I'm cut out for that type of thing, but I still believe in God and never pretended not to. |
