I'm going to a boxing match tonight. A son of one of dh's colleagues is some sort of big deal locally and we were given tickets. Stupidly, I said "fine, if we can get a sitter,"--because we never, ever can last minute-- and our sitter was available. Pugilism is not exactly my thing. And furthermore, what do I wear?

I have no idea if you are to wear a gown or torn blue jeans.

Oh, look, here's a wikianswer:

Thank god for the internets. Wink

Dark wash jeans/fitted turtleneck sweater/ballet flats ok, do you think? Heels instead of flats? I need someone to dress me.

I'd go with the flats. You wanna be able to lash out at a minutes notice, LOL.

I never wear heels, so I'd wear flats anyway. I'm sorry you have to go to this. I have some human rights issues with boxing, but you're just going to be polite, which is really more important in your life than making a scene out of boycotting it. Given the situation, even with my bias against it, I'd probably go and even keep my mouth shut. It's legal afterall. It's not like being given tickets to a dogfight or to bet on a bunch of minority men playing russian roulette with a loaded gun. So, even I would go.

I cannot imagine any circumstances in which I could be induced to go to a boxing match, much less to waste a night with a sitter at one. I hope it wasn't too horrible.

Oh, the best part was that my birthday was Thursday, so not only did we burn a sitter night on this, it also took the place of anything else we could have done this weekend.

It was not as bad as I assumed it would be, although this is probably due, at least in part, to the fact that I got completely blotto king . I hadn't eaten much of anything that day, and we had a really dedicated hostess who kept bringing me drinks without me having to ask. The fighting itself was not as disturbing as I thought it might be-- I could actually see technique/strategy/sportsmanship going on, so in that respect it was no less bothersome than, say, American football. What was disturbing was the rampant misogyny going on everywhere at the event. The hostesses and 'ring girls' had a ridiculous lack of clothes (and the air conditioning was on in the ballroom, so it was freaking cold in there) and they were all teetering around on super high heels. And it was apparently a socially acceptable practice to openly ogle (and grope!) any woman present-- and the women there in general didn't seem to be bothered by it! Going to the bathroom was like crossing a minefield. I was just completely shocked by that.

I'm going to take the opposite opinion on this. Boxing is leagal, so if these guys can make money by doing it, that's their right.
And as for the women employed there, while I do find it disgusting that the men would ogle and grope them, their job is legal, it's not like they're caught in the sex-slave industry. They can quit if it bothers them. If I worked there, I'd quit at the first inapproprite gesture. Who knows why they stay working in those conditions? Maybe they like the male attention, maybe the money, maybe it's a jupming-off point for a modeling carreer? Whatever their reason, I would not stay working there, but they do. So maybe they don't mind it...

Anyway, I hope you had a fun date-night regardless.

Yeah, it is legal and it is their "right" to do it, but face it, boxers become boxers out of desperation. It's only a sport for poor and minority men. They participate in it because it's their possible golden ticket out of the slums. They risk brain damage, body damage and death to do it. It is really the most inhumane legal sport.

Injury is high in football and espcially hockey too. Hockey is very dangerous, is that okay because they're white?

Frankly, if someone wants to box to gain a golden ticket, that may present an opportunity that they might not get anywhere else and it's ultimately their choice. Free country and stuff.

I agree on the High School football subject.
So many boys (and their parents for that matter) believe the only opportunity they'll ever have in life is to be a pro sports player. They put scholastics on the back burner, and when playing the sport doesn't produce the results they've dreamed of, they realize how much time and energy is wasted.
I personally feel that it's worse than boxing in that it's presented to kids at such a young age and glorified in everyday life, and the injuries are more likely to occur due to the age and inexperience of the player or the lack of skills by a coach. And these results happen rich or poor, minority or white.
