WTF? So I'm sitting here watching Last Comic Standing (cause I likes a laugh), eating my Pomegranate Sorbet (seriously delicious) and all of a sudden a black banner shows up at the bottom of the screen (you know they kind they use for breaking news or weather alerts) and I'm thinking "what now?" and start reading the scrolling words and it reads: For information on Manor Grove or general information on elderly care, call XXX-XXX-XXXX. And I'm like, WHAT? It's one thing to have regular commercials (like I don't pay enough for my tv service), but now they're running banner ads DURING the show? This ad came up after the first 3 commercial breaks! I've never seen this before. Anyone else? Please tell me this is not the future of television.
Also, while I'm bitching, let me just say that commercials before movies piss me off too. I do not pay $9 (plus enough for a car payment at the concession stand) to watch commercials! I want previews and maybe a good short (Disney/Pixar are masters of the short), but no effing commercials! |

| Yeah, we have those banner commericals on some channels. And I'm with ya on the commercials before movies. It sucks. |

I've never seen actual commercial banner ads before. That sucks! I hate when the banners that advertise what shows are coming up later on that channel, block something important on the show you're actually watching. Like they're either too large or they move/make noise.
And I agree about the commercials before movies. I was just bitching to DH about this last month when we went to the movies for our anniversary. I get enough soda and cell phone ad exposure at home, thank you.
And don't get me started on movie prices. When Dh and I were dating, we went to the movies all the time, (no seriously, I think we probably saw every movie between 95 and 98. Some movies we even saw more than once, like Titanic and Seven. Sorry, small town.) and the prices didn't seem too bad. Now it costs $18.50 to get in, and $10 for popcorn and pop! And when he gets the itch to bring all the kids with us, too...  |

UG! I haven't seen a banner ad yet during a TV show yet, but it doesn't surprise me. I hate the news scroll that's on CNN and Fox News all the time. So annoying! I just can't pay attention to the show and the scroll at the same time.
but the commercials at the movies are the WORST. If watching them kept the ticket price down it might be tolerable. But the tickets and snacks are outrageous and we have to watch car commercials too? There is already so much product placement in the damn movie anyway that some movies just seem like long commericals with a little story thrown in. |

Yeah, the trailers are fine, but the coke commercials and car commercials before the trailers are irritating.
MammaX3, you should check out the matinees around your area. Here, the adult prices are $7.25-8.75 depending on the theater. But, the matinees are like 5/6 dollars.
We're super lucky to have a theater right near us that has first run movies, but no stadium seating and no digital picture, and their matinees are $4 and the regular adult movies are $6, and their small popcorn and small sodas are $1.50 each. And they're good size smalls, not any smaller than other theater's smalls. So, the four of us who see movies (Liz doesn't yet) can do it for $30. Which isn't terrible. Even still, we budget which movies are theater-worthy and which aren't. And some movies, we'll splurge and go to the higher cost theaters, if it's important to us (Harry Potter). |

That's awesome. I am Hella-Jealous of those prices. There are some times that we can manage to catch a matinee, and I'm left thinking "Thank God I did not pay full price for that bomb."  Happily N'Ever After anyone? Crap, crap, crap! |

Oh, jeez, I saw that and it was crap, crap, crap. We saw the DVD at a store the other day and Cooper said "Look Mommy, they have that bad movie. Let's not get it."

Trailers are good. In fact, I think there should be more (except scary ones, because they freak me out), but I'm talking about commercials, just like the ones shown on TV. Boo! I do NOT go to the movies for commercials!
As far as movie prices, they suck. At the theaters were dh lives, they give a military discount, which means you pay matinee prices for all movies ($5.25). That is really nice. At the theaters where I live, there is no military discount, despite the fact that we are right next to an Air Force base. Matinees are $6.50 (unless it's a heat advisory day, in which case you get a whole quarter off admission-wheeeee) and full price shows are $8. Then you have to get popcorn and soda and whatnot, which is a whole lot more money, so it really pisses me off that there are commercials.
The theater we went to in Germany was $3 for all shows. They used to get movies 3-6 weeks after they came out in the States, but starting around 2002, they got the "big" movies the same week they came out Stateside. Granted we had only 1 screen, but there were 4 theaters on different bases (all within 20 minutes of each other), so you could see different movies. And for $3, ($1.50 for popcorn and $1.50 for soda) we couldn't really complain. Also, the German theaters (which make American theaters look pitiful in comparison) got 2-4 movies in English each month (no subtitles or dubbing) and if we really wanted to see something (I think we saw Harry Potter 3 there) we went there. It was pricey though. I think $12 each to get in, BUT you had assigned seats and could buy your seats online, so you knew exactly where you were going to sit and the theaters are soooooo nice. Plus, you can buy beer and wine and real food (pizza, sandwiches, burgers, ice cream, etc-in as much as these are real food). They also have a HUGE candy center (think those stores in the mall that you steer your kids away from), and a build your own nacho bar. The food is not as expensive as it is in America either. And, you can buy beer and wine. Wait, did I mention that already? The seats have little trays that pop up out of the arm so you have some place to put your food, or there are tables out in the lobby if you prefer to eat before the movie. Plus, you can drink beer and wine while you watch the movie. Wouldn't all movies be better if you could drink beer and wine? |

Absolutely JM! There was a theater in Austin that DH and I would frequent when we lived there--the Alamo Drafthouse. They served beer (maybe wine too, but I wouldn't remember that. I'm a beer gal myself) and real food too. It was awesome! |

| I know this is an older forum but it caught my eye. I have never seen banner ads like that before. That is CRAZY!! But on the same note I am 'bout tired of the scrolling message about the digital conversion coming this February. I mean- how many times are they going to tell us that????? We get it!!! |

LOL. Really? Because I was going to ask if you wanted me to sign you up for their reminder newsletter.
That's why we have TIVO. Watching shows with commercials is like torture for me now. Plus, it cuts it down to like 40 minutes. |

I love love love my DVR!! I am with you on skipping the commercials- it does save tons of time and we all never have enough of that... Plus being able to magically make The Wiggles or Sesame Street appear for my daughter is a life saver! We are moving to a new house we are renting this weekend and Directv can't get out to do our new install til July 7th and oh Lordy I am already counting the minutes... |
