Jess, what kind of preschool has Graham been going to?

Have you read any books that you found particularly helpful in dealing with him?

That's wonderful that you had such a great experience with this last appointment. Smile

I'm still processing what I've been told about Owen. I think I'm going to try to get him seen at Vandy this summer and see what they have to say.

He goes to a Special Education preschool, with kids that range from severe disabilities to head start or at risk kids. They're grouped in classrooms along with children with similar delays or disabilities/strengths.

I really like The Oasis Guide to Asperger, but the most valuable information I've researched online. Janna has a lot of great links, but I'll try to post some later, when I have more time.

It has really made me rethink getting a formal diagnosis. Knowing what I know now, I would advocate for it.

What is Vandy?

With Graham, it's different, because we've known that there was something going on for a long time and he's been in EI since he was a baby.

Just remember though, years ago, they didn't even diagnose or recognize many kids like Owen and Graham. We are so lucky.

What kind of services has Owen received in the past? Did you say he is going to go to a Special Ed. preschool too?

Vandy = Vanderbilt. I just saw an ad in a local parenting magazine that they do evaluations for young children with language delays at no cost with a possibility that the child will also be asked to participate in a study.

With the evaluations he's been going through with the school district, they do not give a diagnosis. Not at this point at least. Their main concern is getting him to qualify, which he does under both language delay and cognitive delay. The testing gave him a language functioning of a 15 month old and cognitive level of a 21 month old (he's 42 months right now). Cognitively, he scored very well for problem solving, but his performance on the socially geared aspects of the testing were so low that it really pulled down his score. There is such a breach there, I hate that they were tested under the same umbrella.

He will be attending the Special Ed preschool. He will be starting near the end of April, and will in all likelihood go for the next two years before Kindergarten.

I've known something was wrong with Owen since he was a tiny baby too. Sad Nobody would listen to me, including several peds. It wasn't until he was two that my concerns stopped falling on deaf ears. Crying or Very sad

I have the Out of Sync Child on the way.

Jessica,
I am so glad to hear you had a good experience. That is exactly how you should feel about Graham. If you focus on all the cool talents he does have, you will see that he is going to be able to overcome or compensate for any challenges he may have.

Honeybee,
The people I know at Vandy are excellent. They should be able to help you.

You both are doing the right thing. Early intervention can make a big impact so keep on searching and doing what you need to do for your child. You will be the expert (even if you feel you are not now) and you will be the best advocate for your child. Let me know if you need any information from me.

I was going to ask about Easter Seals but they stop services at age 3.

You are so blessed to have him in services early!

I need to get that book (Out of Sync Child), but I really need the Tony Attwood book (Jessica, do you have that one?).

My son didn't get dx until kindergarten; my girlfriend's son did get dx until 12 years old.

Hang in there- Smile
