There are some parents who micro-manage their kids and then there is this.
WTF?!?! Parents like these should be shot! OK maybe not shot, how about bitch-slapped upside the head?
How in the hell are kids going to learn the proper life-skills in order to get them to fly the nest? I mean it is OK to help a kid write a resume (but the kid needs to actually write the damn thing him/herself), maybe network an old friend or colleague to get the kid an interview...but that's it. These 'kids' are now adults and need to learn that not everything is going to be handed to them and yes, they will need to take some lumps (i.e., not getting the job).
It can also be said that kids do not want to be 'lead by the hand' and in the shadow of their parents. |

I agree. I can't believe these parents don't see that they're not helping in the long run. Can you imagine what they must have been like in grade or High school!?
The closest thing I ever did to this was to have my mom drive me to the interview (I was still in H.S.). That's it. She sat in the car.
And I admit, when I was applying for a county job, I asked my Father-in-law to help me with my resume, only because at his job, he does the hiring and comes across dozens of crap resumes, so he helped me format it in a way that he'd love to see from someone applying to him.
But to actually answer q's, talk on the phone, and accompany them to a job fair!? Gimme a break.
And as for the comment in the article

Isn't that the fault of the lack of parenting in itself. "I screwed up my MTV-watching kid, so I'll reverse it by picking his major and getting him a job".
Ha! Could you just see Bill Gates' Mommy sitting next to him, today, in a cushy executive chair, whispering the answers to him and wiping his sniffly nose! |
