I need to go back to working for the man
Ah, I get it. I hope your business takes off soon! Working for the man sucks. |

Have you tried Freecycle? You should sign on to a local group and announce that you are looking for one. You might get some quick responses that way.
Just a thought. |
Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. We moved in August, and I haven't joined the Freecycle group here yet. Thanks for the idea. |

The crockpot I have was my mom's. It looks like the Brady bunch's crockpot. It's burnt orange with little mushrooms around the bottom. |

Finally got a crockpot the other day (a Rival 6qt. number) and made the beef stew recipe posted along with some green beans and biscuits -- it got a big .
Being a very hands on cook, it was a little disconcerting just having this thing stewing away on the counter unattended for 8 hours! I kept peeking at it, lol. Also a little weird preparing dinner at 9am on a Sunday, but also nice to get it out of the way!
The crockpot is definitely going into steady rotation -- I think the savory lentil bean soup is next... although the country style ribs are tempting -- I slow smoked some over the summer and I know what a tasty cut of meat those are...
That's so kick ass you have a hand-me-down one. Burnt orange somehow just feels so right for a crockpot............. |

Funny you should mention that. I have the ugly mustard yellow one.
Oldies, but goodies are great! |

Mine is also a hand-me down or inheritance, its a cute little almond number with pastel flowers, probably the top of the Rival line in 1980 |

Yeah, the only bad thing about mine is that it's kinda small.
So Prescott, the beef stew did not taste like peanut butter? |

Prescott, I'm glad you like your crockpot. How is beef stew with peanut butter in it?

Nope, there are enough different flavors going on that the peanut flavor is lost -- it's probably just in there as a binder/thickener.
The only thing I would probably do differently is cut back on the liquid -- I put in beef stock "to cover", and wound up using 2 cans. The sauce was kinda thin.
I think I might try my chili recipe in there this weekend, if it turns out well I'll post it for anyone interested. |

Here's the stovetop version. I just remembered I had shared it before. It's the total shiz, IMHO. Secret family recipe, don't go posting it all over the place!
On second thought, screw the crockpot for this recipe -- you still would have to brown everything, might as well just keep it on the stove... |

I need to try that. My chili is not that great. I did put a tbsp of cocoa powder in it last time, though, which definitely improved it.
However, I am two for three on seeing chili again this pregnancy, so I will have to wait on that. |

Thanks. I'll definitely try this. My general approach to chili tends to be 'throw a bunch of stuff in a pot and let simmer.' I like the idea of the cocoa. I've never put any in chili before, but I like the flavor in other savory dishes (like mole). And don't worry, my lips are sealed.

You know, you might give the crock a whirl anyway. I've started doing this a lot with things that need a long, slow simmer. My stove is one of those crappy electric coil ones, and I find I can get better heat control with the crock (although, maybe you don't have that problem). |
