I am always at a loss on how warmly to dress my kids when they are infants. You know those undershirt onesies? Does she need one of those? Usually we are just hanging around our 68 degree house so it seems like just having foot jammies on would be warm enough.

But my mom is all about those undershirt things though so she nags me about it when she is here. When I put one on under her clothes it jsut seems like so much!

What's a neurotic mother to do? Undershirt or no?

Grandmothers are all about the layers. That is very old-school, but totally not necessary IMO. Pediatricians have known for years that babies do not lose heat faster than adults. What my pediatrician always told me is that your infant will be affected by the temperature as much as you are, so if you feel the need to put on layers, then do so for your baby, if you feel the need to put on shorts, then do so for your baby.

I'm a very simple person, so I was all about the one-stop footies.

The only thing I liked undershirts for is if I thought my boys were wearing something itchy and it was a barrier of protection, but then I got wise and only bought soft outfits. It's all about condsolidating, especially when you have 3!

I love onesies, and dresed Ethan in them just about every day of his life between birth and age 3. Laughing I still put them on Owen too.

I'm weird in that other than those first couple weeks of real newborn-ness, I just can't dress baby in pajamas for daytime. I would do little two piece comfy outfits, or even one pieces that did not have feet (cuz the feet make them jammies to me, lol) and socks and little slippers. I always had a little hat on Ethan, Owen would never tolerate one.

Mmmm...I loved having little babies during winter. Snuggling them all up in to cute little bundles. Very Happy

We do the short sleeved onesies during the day here, under regular clothes. At night, she has a long-sleeved onesie on over the short sleeved onesie and socks, then she has her blanket sleeper on. Her little feet get cold! We keep it at 68 here at night, but still, she gets chilly!

Babies with less body fat do loose heat more quickly than adults, is what I've learned. Dress the baby in a layer about one more than what you'd be comfortable in. So for us, when it was winter I had Aaron in a one piece cotton outfit and if it was cold, a onesie underneath.

But all babies are different. Some get heated and sweat very easily and that ups the SIDS risk. YOu have to go with what your baby feels is comfortable. If you have her in layers and she is warm or sweaty, take it off, it is more dangerous for a baby to be heated than a tiny bit chilly.

I would totally wear jammies all day if I could, and do if I'm not leaving the house, so it never bothered me to keep the baby in them, lol. I'm with Jessica--I used the onesies more as a barrier if something seemed itchy. Sometimes under things with zippers I felt like the onesie might make it more comfy.

I love gowns for newborns. It's too bad they seem to be vanishing. They're just so simple, you know? The ones with the bottoms that can also be snapped as pantlegs are the best, because you can put them in the carseat if you need to without needing to change their clothes. All three of mine had double bili lights for jaundice, too, so the gowns were a total necessity to let the big "tail" of the bili blanket come out the end.

Ethan always has a onesie on underneath whatever he's wearing, usually a long-sleeved one now that the weather's gotten colder. Hunter wears a white short-sleeved t-shirt underneath all of his clothes too. Right now, Ethan has a short-sleeved onesie on, with a sleeper over top of it, and he's wrapped in a heavy blanket. Oh yeah - he has a hat on too! It's a little chilly in our house...maybe about 67 F? Even in the summer, though, I do a short-sleeved onesie underneath anything that's not a t-shirt. They seem much more comfortable (definitely less itchy) than any other kind of material that they make kids' clothes out of.

I always used the onsies under everything because they made the clothes fit better and would keep bellies from being exposed. You know how it's so hard to keep a baby's shirt tucked in since they are so squishy. I would always put a clean one on after bath at night and then a sleeper over it. I would never put PJs on and then the sleeper though (my mom would tell me to do that?!?!?!?!?!?) Then I would just keep that one on the next day (barring any mess/stains on it).

Now I use the regular tshirts too. I think they are more comfy under sweaters (especially itchy ones) and better than a turtle neck.

edited to add: the main reason I liked the snap onsies is becaue the zippers and snaps on the clothes would be cold/irritating on skin and the snap ones leave gaping holes. kwim?

Do you mean like regular cotton PJs under the fleece footie PJs? I've never heard of such a thing!

Lord, I'm so hot natured, my kids are lucky if I remember to dress them in seasonally-appropriate clothing. I don't wear a jacket unless there is precipitation or it is below 40, because I just hate having that constricted, bulky coat feeling. I'm usually just going from my house to the car to whatever heated building, anyway. But it took me a few embarrasing bad-mommy incidents to remember to put a coat on my kid. Embarassed

In the winter I keep my house pretty cool (and this year it my be down right cold ), so I used undershirts most of the time . I liked the diagonal snap kind better than oneies, because you don't have to pull it over their head.

What do you guys mean by sleepers? Like those bags that zip up? I put those on alone or with a onesie underneath.

That's what my mom suggested. She said that you're supposed to use the blanket sleepers like blankets. I don't know, it seems like too many layers. Although I did contemplate putting Liz in thermal underwear under her sleeper. But, just the long sleeved shirt and the socks seem all right. We don't keep the house cold--68, but a few weeks ago, her hands and her face were really cold when she would wake up, and her legs and arms were just not warm. Now her arms and legs are warm, and her face and hands are all right. Maybe she just had to acclimate to the cold?

DCH this is for you: The other day my 2yo was looking over my shoulder when I was reading one of your posts and he insisted that Jack was his older brother, I said no, that is Jack, Molly, and Kate. This morning when I scrolled down to read the latest post on this thread, I scrolled past the picture of your children and he says "I want to see Jack" Smile . Cute.
Edit: I just showed him the picture again and he said " I see Jack, and Molly and Kate."

We're hot natured too, but we don't use blankets. The blanket sleeper acts as a blanket (so yes I put them over top of long sleeved cotton pjs). I have a serious SIDS paranoia, and Hunter and I don't really keep the covers on anyway...we're kickers and movers in our sleep. Babies don't get any covers in this house.

Annie~Blanket sleepers are the fleece zip up pjs with feet at the bottom.
