I was going to post this in the fertility part, but for me, abortion does play into it.
Mike and I were going to have a tubal reversal done, but it wasnt' possible, so now we are going to do IVF. This opens up some ethical questions for us both, and we are trying to figure out what to do. I have two main concerns as we go into this. The other I will save for another day.
At the end, there are going to be embryos left over and frozen. I've had two cesareans and can't really see being able to have a ton more kids. I don't know what to do with the embryos that are left over. I know we will probably keep them frozen until I am 40 to make sure that we don't want another. After that, I don't feel comfortable destroying them, since they have already started to develop. It seems like an abortion type thing to me, which I am against. It also seems very weird to adopt them out, which is our other option. The idea that my kids might have full brothers and sisters running around somewhere and maybe being treated well, but maybe not, really bothers me. |

| It seems like you really only have four choices: carry them all yourself over time, give them to another couple, donate them to science for research, or have them destroyed. There doesn't seem to be any way around it. If none of those choices is ok with you, then it seems like something you shouldn't do. |

| That is a difficult choice, but I agree 100% with Kristy. Personally, I would probably donate them to science, so at least some potential good can come out of it, but that's just me. IMO, there is nothing wrong with using an embryo to save other people's lives or to further our knowledge in how to help and save people. I don't believe in creating embryos soley for that purpose, but in your situation, I believe it's the right thing to do. Again, JMHO. |

IVF doesn't always take the 1st time, or 2nd , or 3rd time, so you may use all of them yourselves when trying to get pregnant. I agree that you should know what you will do with the left over ones if there are any. I'm not sure if you are asking what we would do, or what you should do? But, I think giving them to another couple would be the best thing for someone who has the belief system that I *think* you do . |

I think we will donate them to an infertile couple if any are left, because although that isn't great to me, it also feels more right than the other choices.
I was hoping to have a tubal reversal, so the ethical question of extra embryos is something I haven't really thought about too much. When they told us that we would do IVF instead, it kind of threw me for a loop, because there are issues to consider in IVF that there aren't in a tubal reversal. |
