Does anybody know if any preschools allow 3 yr. olds that are not potty trained or is that unheard of?

Cooper is not potty trained and goes to preschool. They put him on the potty 3 times a day and he goes for them, but not at home! Argh! As far as I know there are lots of preschools that take unpotty trained children.

Most schools around here require potty training to start at 3 but I have heard of a lot of moms putting a pull up on their child if they are still having the occasional wetting accident. Has he started training at all yet? He's not 3 for a few more mos, right?

Well, I totally don't see him being able to potty train now. He's 2 yrs. and 8 months. Remember though, he has sensory issues, so I can't even get him to wear a pull-up (he's still wearing diapers).

He'll probably go to an EI preschool, but I'm just thinking, if he doesn't qualify for their 5 day program, I'd like to supplement his EI preschool with a "regular" preschool. I think that would be good for him, but I don't know what to do about his potty training.

Around here it's unheard of, which is ridiculous since a lot of kids are not trained by 3!!! Especially boys!

Aah, I just came back on because I remembered about our district preschools which serve EI kids as well as "typically developing" kids and they waive the potty training requirement for any kids on an IEP. Jack wasnt trained until he was 3 either. It wasnt worth it to work on it when he wasnt ready! bandhead

I hope Graham will qualify for the 5 day so you dont have to worry about finding another place for him as well!

Yeah, Holden was too, but I know Graham is going to have major issues with it. I have no expectations for him anywhere in the near future.

That seems almost discriminatory, ya know? But, I guess preschools are private schools and they can do what they want, plus, there might be some health code issues there -- who knows? dontknow

Shit, what am I gonna do? Maybe I'll talk to his OT about it, I can't be the only one in this boat. Hopefully, he'll qualify for the EI preschool for more than a few hours a week, OTOH, I kinda want him to be in a "normal" setting too, ya know?

Oops, I posted when you did! Thanks for wishful thinking! Graham has certain quirks and I just *know* that potty training is going to be on his hypo-sensory input. He simply doesn't like things are not right in his mind, LOL.

When will you find out how many days or hours he qualifies for? Will he need another eval first? I was really hoping Jack would qualify for speech services and our district preschool because he has a whole bunch of articulation errors but he just missed qualifying when I had him screened in the spring.

Some daycares might have "preschool" programs in the morning that might not be as strict about potty training....

We'll know in January. It's just hard to know where he'll test, ya know? He just had a developmental evaluation last week, he was actually discharged from developmental about 3 months ago because he was doing so well, and he tested well again, but his sensory put him at about the 18 month range, which didn't surprise anybody. His speech is probably around there too, but his receptive language is way beyond his age level, so it's hard to tell. The therapists have said out SD weighs heavily on sensory and creative play which doesn't tell the whole story.

I'm torn because I'm not sure I want him in a "special needs" class 5 days a week even if he does qualify because I want him to have role models that excel as well? Is that coming out right? Confused I hope so.

Does your EI preschool have all kids on IEPs or does it have a mixture? The ones here have a mixture so there are kids that serve as "models" (for lack of a better word) as well as kids who have certain developmental delays, etc. I would want the same thing as you though- for not all the kids to be receiving special services but more of a balance.

Around here, most of the monetessori schools dont require pt. many of the preschools do though. Kiersten JUST went potty for the first time on the potty on August 19th. See, I'm so excited i KNOW the date! LOL... She was 3 years 7 months old. I was seriously getting worried. But now she's fully trained. yippeee!!

The EI school here does not require potty training. And they have peer role models as well (average kids). It's a gREAT school! Jacob has been there since he was 2. I'm surprised they're putting graham in so late?? Look around, I bet there are more programs, especially if you're willing to chip in $$.

Gosh I can't even imagine jacob being potty trained anytime soon. I would bet the EI will take graham, they are fully aware of preemie challenges!

At 2 he was put in a "transitional group class" to transition him for preschool. He's still in that. I wonder if that is what Jacob is in.

Oh, I know EI will take Graham w/o being potty trained, but I was hoping to get him into a "normal" preschool setting as well.

Annie, I don't think they have normal development children at the special needs school. I'm not even sure how they would get in or how the funding would work for them. I do know that they try to place like delays with like delays, but that still concerns me given that Graham is not delayed in his comprehension.

Guess I'll have to wait and see how it plays out...if they put him in a class where I don't think he's going to learn anything, then I dunno, maybe I'll look into a home daycare. I truly feel like he needs to be around children his age. He doesn't have a lot of awareness of other children (or interest), but I think that's because he's more interested in how things work rather than getting down and dirty. I really want to seem engage with other children.

I was thinking that too, and a Halloweeny baby too!

Annies pregnancy has gone by so fast! I don't think you were as sick with this one though, right Annie?
