I never had a problem nursing at a restaurant. I figured if it was a good enough place for me to eat, it was good enough for my babe to eat there, too.

The thing about being discreet is this: don't ever judge a mom who isn't being as discreet as you would like, (unless she takes her shirt off or something!) Dd had a habit of grabbing the part of my shirt that covered the top of my breast, and pulling it waaay up while nursing. She wanted absolutely nothing to do with being covered up -- probably something about wanting fresh air while she ate. So needless to say, I got over the whole modesty issue pretty quick!

I was able, once she was 1 or so, to put her in a sling, and cover up completely by pulling it around us. I'd grocery shop while nursing her, and noone would know! I'd talk to someone, and she'd let out a loud slurp, and they'd be like, "do you have a baby in there?" heehee

I only ever had one person say anything negative to me about bfip. Oddly enough, I was in Whole Foods Market, in the area they have with tables and chairs where you can eat the stuff you bought at the salad bar or whatnot. I was absolutely shocked! I said something about this being a natural food store, and continued until dd was finished.
