| Who is the freak manager? Jul and I totally cracked up thinking about the image and it's components. I seriously think the person who shut down the show has some issues and needs to get over it. |

There's no free speech in a private institution. The owners/management can shut it down if they want to. That *their* right, and consequently, I don't think you'd want to live in a society where they didn't have that right.
That reminds me when disorderly people would tell Scott, when he was a bouncer at a popular night club, that they had to let them in. They would argue it was a public place and they'd call the police if Scott didn't let them enter. He would always encouraged that and would say, "Go right ahead!"
It's a private place, they can basically do whatever the hell they want, as long as it's not rooted in any kind of prejudise, they can prevent you from coming in even if they don't like your clothes!!
I happen to like the piece, or at least what little I can see of it. It looks/sounds interesting, but it's not a matter of free speech, it a matter of the gallery management exercises their rights. You may not agree with it, but they can do it. |

Can you copy and paste? The link wasnt to the article!
My opinion is that the owner or manaer does have the right to decide what artwork is displayed. |

My opinion is that this little controversy just made the artist an assload of money if he's smart at all.
He just got the best publicity an artist can get...to be 'censored'.
I think it's great. I hope he makes a million on that stupid painting...why ANYONE would want that image in their house is beyond me, but someone will buy it simply because this publicity just shot the value up like 150%.
I agree that private galleries due have the right to take pieces down, but we are talking about New York. I mean for goodness sakes, if a crucifix hanging in urine makes it in to a gallery, then what's the big deal about a Bush painting made out of Monkeys? |

Whoops, that's weird, it didn't make me login before...
Anyway, it pretty much gives the same facts as the article Becky posted, with this extra tidbit I found interesting:
| Quote: |
Mr. Turco did that, and last Thursday, the meandering hallway of the market on Manhattan's West Side filled with a gallery crowd of artists, models and rap singers. But the presence of a disc jockey and open bar created a nightclub milieu. That provoked another person who helps manage the market, Mr. Turco said.
"The party's over right now," Mr. Turco said the market worker told him before calling security to clear the crowd. |
