Mother Magnetism

This week: overplucking, early morning perfection, perms, and the beauty challenge of the week

by Kelly Reising

I went a little crazy with the tweezers and over-plucked my brows. Now I look like Cruella DeVille! Did you ever notice how all the Disney villainesses always have little skinny eyebrows?! Will they ever come back and what can I do in the meantime? Help!

Put down the tweezers down and back slowly away from the mirror. Don’t look at the mirror again or pick up the tweezers for at least six weeks, because that’s how long it’s going to take for some of those poor over-plucked eyebrow hairs to grow back. In the mean time, get acquainted with a brow pencil or brow powder. You are going to need them! Brow powder is like eyeshadow for your brows. It’s very matte and is meant to match closely to your hair color. I prefer a brow powder applied with a stiff angled brush. It tends to look more like natural hair. My favorite is Anastasia’s Brow Powder Duo ($22) because it comes in a variety of different shades for all hair colors, even for redheads! You can find it at Sephora.com, and while you’re there if you don’t have an angled brush, you can get one. Pick up Sephora’s Short Handle Synthetic Beveled Eyebrow Brush for only $9. It’s cheaper then Anastasia’s brush and just as good! Then, as you fill in your sparse brows lightly with the brow powder, repeat this phrase… “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the over-pluckiest of them all? I am!”

It seems like all the parents that drop off their kids at school in the morning look perfect, while I can hardly get my two kids out the door on time. Never mind looking good, I’m still in my PJ’s! What can I do quickly in the morning to look better?

Don’t you love those women who can throw on the perfect outfit complete with full makeup and get their kids to school on time? You would totally hate me, because I am one of them. Just kidding! I swear, I took my daughter to preschool this morning wearing my husband’s pajama bottoms, the flannel kind with the cute duckies on them! Seriously, getting yourself and your kids together in the morning is hard. Here is a trick though if you only have a minute to get ready. You always have time to throw on some jeans and a decent shirt, right? Try to lay it out the night before. Put it on the second you get up. If you don’t have time to do you makeup, make sure you at least swipe on some lipstick and grab a cute stylish pair of sunglasses. I always leave a tube of lipstick or gloss in my glove compartment with my sunglasses. If you lips are done, you will look like you spent time getting ready, even if you still have smears of yesterday’s mascara under your eyes! Sunglasses give the appearance of chic, even if it’s just an illusion!

Should I get a perm?

Is this my 83-year-old grandmother asking this question? I love you Grandma, but no. No perm for you. Oh, all right Grandma, you can still get a perm, but no one else, OK?  No more perms for anyone! Enough said.

Beauty Challenge of the Week - Every once in a while I will throw one of these beauty tidbits in. Try to do it, it’s fun!

I love the 40s style glamour of old time movie stars—you know like Joan Crawford, Vivian Lee, Rita Hayworth, that kind of style. I wonder what they were like with their children? Did they struggle to get beautiful in the morning? Or did they just have that effortless glamour pouring out of everything they did? Well, we know that Joan Crawford certainly didn’t unstrap her kids from bed in the morning without first putting on her face, right? Here is my beauty challenge to you for the week: wear red lipstick. Not a gloss, or a stain, but a true tube of old fashioned red lipstick. Don’t say you can’t wear red, just do it! There is truly a red lipstick perfect for any skin tone. You might just channel a little of that movie star glamour, even if you are just picking up your kid from piano lessons!
