Not Your Average Fairy Tale

Sex Education. Lesbian Style.

By Melissa Doak

Let us know how it turns out! I'm in the same boat. I love how you tried to answer your daughter's questions in age appropriate language. The contrast between how our parents talked to us and how we think we're going to explain it, being that we are so much more liberated, smarter, etc. was spot on! I felt exactly the same way--oh, yeah, until the questions actually started. The fact is, sex is loaded no matter how sophisticated we are. We're animals and it's primal, language doesn't cover that up.

This is a really tough issue. Heterosexual sex is always made into this clinical reproductive process for kids - which makes parents a lot more confortable discussing it. My son was about 8 when he suddenly was inspired (after having a few years of confidence in the answer to "where do babies come from?") to ask about sex and our close gay friend and his partner. I was pulling the car into the garage in a snow storm at the time. At least he didn't have to see my face as I gave him those facts! And he was like "oh..okay" and went to play gameboy.
