Going Sterile

We're done.

By Laura Shovan

I felt exactly the same way when my husband had his vasectomy 3 1/2 years ago! Lord knows we don't want any more, but it was strange to close the door on that era in our lives.

Our second child, a son, was born at 10:15, and by 11:30, I had a tubal ligation. I did not regret it then and still don't. Our first child, a girl, was born six weeks premature, and I almost had our son five weeks early. I did not want to risk the health of another child, by accident, when we had two healthy children. The tubal ligation was freedom for me from worries. Just wish I'd had a hysterectomy at the time instead of having it three years ago. Now that would have been liberating!

What bothers me is that everyone seems to think they can ask the "are you having more" question to begin with! We have a blended family of 4 kids - yet everyone asks us if we're having another someday. Nosy and rude - and our answer is "No, we REALLY aren't" too! Still...why must we publicize his sterlity for their curiousity?
