Try a Swiffer - pivots into corners, larger flat area (from a fearful spider squisher).

Kudos on nailing it with the broom handle, thats a tough shot. I recently taped a piece of cardboard onto the end of a long stick which squashes spiders very well, you can also put a wet wipe on the cardboard to clean up afterwards.
