Nature vs. Nurture

You're gonna turn him gay.

By Cindy Morrow

I too have a 3 yr old boy who likes to wear my nail polish, and every pair of shoes he owns EVERY day, and 100 different outfits throughout the day, and wants every girl toy he sees on the commercials. Does that make him gay? NO. Like you said, he is nothing more than curious. I myself was a HUGE tomboy who HATED girls toys and would much rather a GI JOE than a BARBIE. Eventually, he will out grow this infatuation. Until then, let him be innocent and enjoy all the wonders of purple nail polish!!!

A male cousin of mine wanted to be wonderwoman when he was small. He just came out. Hmmm.

I got the same comments from my husband. My son, now 5, went through a stage where he wanted to wear my makeup. He was just curious about it and wanted to do everything I was doing. My husband was all worried about that. My response was, makeup will not "make" him gay, but if it does turn out that he's gay, so what?? I'll love him just the same. :-) In any case, he's since grown out of the makeup stage. It made me sad, though, that my own husband has such backwards views.

Too many people confuse sexual orientation and gender roles.

Most 3 year olds have NO concept of sex at all. But they do understand gender roles, and maybe start to understand the noticable physical differences.

I think kids' curoisity of gender roles at this age is healthy, but it is probably also important to explain to them how other people may react. Not everyone is as accepting and understanding of our children as we parents are.
